It looks like most in this section are US based so this might not be entirely relevant but as its an ebay question it seem a good place to start rather than the UK page.
The coins I don't want I sell on via uk ebay. This helps to pay for my own collecting. I have always tried to give an honest and reasonably detailed description of the coins, much easier for a single coin than say 20 George V pennies ! I do not attempt to add any grading as this seems so subjective (very different I believe in the US ).
I usually get it correct but it can be a bit disappointing to be given poor feedback when possibly one coin out of many might not be quite as good as the rest.
I notice that many sellers, certainly in the UK, just list what the coin is and that's it i.e. George V half crown 1920, no further details at all.
Some might add ' judge condition from photo's', some don't.
So, the question is.. does this make any difference to the ease of selling, do I do better because I add a description or doesn't it make much difference. Would I do better (probably much safer re feedback) to just give basic detail.
What do you all do ?
Any opinions, comments much appreciated.
Cheers and thanks
Brian.

I always try to have the description with as much detail as possible but I have the caveat that I am not a certified coin grader and that the buyer should look at the photos and judge for themselves. With hundreds of coins sold, I've not had any complaints about the grade of coin received. If someone wants to pay for a specific grade they should buy slabbed coins.
Rest in Peace

I as a buyer prefer at least a brief description of the coin listed. especially if the coin is scratched dented, bent, or big hit. the more honest you are, the better your sales would be IMHO.

My rule of thumb is:
-- describe them as if there were no pictures
-- image them as if there were no description

/1/ I don't think it has anything to do with your descriptions and everything to do with lot sales. In a lot of 20, the best and worst really, really stand out. Causes buyer's remorse and thus bad feedback. "I paid fair prices for 20, 5 were really nice, but one was really, really ugly" becomes "Disappointing quality"

/2/ I like Kanga's rules.

Also - make sure that anything important is in the title and description. Assume somebody has a search setup for THAT coin... how do they find it? What would they be searching for? List it in the right category! Give the KM#. Are there alternative names, nicknames, whatever - make it easy to find and buy YOUR coin vs. the massive mess out there.

I may be the oddball, but a lack of description doesn't necessarily deter me from a purchase. If I am pleased with the appearance of the coin, the first thing I look at is the sellers feedback number and percentage and if they are a power seller. Those will deter me more than lack of description.

Don't get me wrong the description is nice, but one of the last things I look at before I click buy it now.

Yes, I think that a description is preferred, but be careful what you say!
