I just inherited a ton of coins from all over the world. I've always had more American coins than not, so what I'm asking is, are there any good websites I could use to identify world coins? Some of the coins are from 1600's and up. Some might be older, I'm not sure at this moment. I was going to extensively go through them tomorrow.

Thanks!
-Brent

fnd1234: to the CCF!

Get yourself a used second hand older copy of
'World Coins', by Krause,
from a coin dealer. (A second hand copy is cheaper to buy)
Typically they are about the size of a telephone book.

How much older? And may I ask "why an older one?"

I guess by earlier and used he means it will be cheaper. So that is why.

Older ones are good for identification purposes as they're usually cheaper. If all you want is identification and don't care about values, then buying the latest edition is an unnecessary expense.

As for ID websites, all the data in the Krause catalogues is also on the NGC world coin database, including latest prices. However, it's a little awkward to use if you really have no clue about where a coin is from.

I've found an excellent resource is Google itself. Simply type in all the words you can read on the coin, as they appear to you, and you should be able to find someone else on the Internet somewhere who's also asking or talking about them. Even if the alphabet is different, entering "near enough is good enough" letters will usually get you a result. For example, typing "EAAHNIKH" into Google still gets you Greek coins as the number one hit, even though those "A"s are actually the Greek letter lambda.

Finally, there's CCF, right here. If you've got a coin that stumps you, just take a reasonably good picture and upload it here onto the forum in the ID Required section.

Sorry for the loss.

Can you expand on what type of coins you are talking about? Often collectors split coins into "US an Foreign". It is much more complicated than this.

Well I'm able to figure out the coins that I can mostly read. Like english, dutch, canadian, italian, etc. But the coins from what seems to be russia or greece and all that confuse me. My plan is to eventually separate them by country, currency, date, etc. The country part is what I'm having a bit of "fun" with. What it seems like happened is that they bought a bunch of different grab bags then just kind of threw all the excess coins into a bag.

Some are in quite terrible condition and some have been obviously cleaned, but i'd still like to separate and catalog them all to see what there are. I just don't know what coins look from different areas, old currency, etc.

I plan on doing some more research soon, so if I have any questions about a specific coin I'll make sure to post a picture on here.

Thanks,
-Brent

Another option is your local library - they often have copies of the Krause catalog you can check out. You might eventually want your own copy, but the library is an easy place to start.

I second the Google option. View the images after you have searched on some text, then look at the web pages of images closest to what you are looking at in your hand. You might not find an exact match, but you certainly find some interesting stuff.
