Royal Australian Mint - With the world's focus on the christening of Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, the Royal Australian Mint (the Mint) extends congratulations for this special day with a charming collectible coin.

The special keepsake to be presented to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge is a fine silver proof coin depicting baby building blocks, symbolic of the young family which they are building together.

Royal Australian Mint Chief Executive Officer Mr Ross MacDiarmid said the Mint is honoured to have the opportunity to provide this unique gift which has been sent to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge ahead of the christening this weekend.

"As the newest piece in our Royal Collection it was imperative that this coin was unique; fit for a princess as there are few days in a young girl's life that are as monumental as her christening; we are privileged to have the opportunity to mark this special occasion day," said Mr MacDiarmid.

"Officially approved by Buckingham Palace, inspiration for this coin came from the proud affiliation that Australia has with the modern British monarchy and we sought to give the Duke and Duchess a gift that can be kept for generations to come," said Mr MacDiarmid.

Accompanied by a special birth announcement card, the coin design includes a golden wattle representing the relationship between Australia and the British Royal Family.

The christening of the fourth-in-line to the British throne is not only a substantial event in the life of Princess Charlotte but will also be the first occasion that the Duke and Duchess, Prince George and Princess Charlotte will be seen in public together.

This fine silver 50c proof coin to be gifted to the Duke and Duchess can also be purchased by the public, retailing for $85.00 each and is available now from the Mint Contact Centre on 1300 652 020 or by visiting the Royal Australian Mint's online store: https://eshop.ramint.gov.au/2015-50.../210444.aspx

An uncirculated coin featuring the same design is also available for $10.00 from https://eshop.ramint.gov.au/2015-50.../310675.aspx
Rest in Peace

I'm sorry, but spending $85 for a new coin that has maybe 10% of that value in silver is about as close as you can get to buying a tiny silver beanie baby.

Compare that new coin that will always be kept new to what you can buy in a real historical numismatic coin and the choice to buy this "special edition" stuff should be saved for the home shopping network, not a mint product.
