I finally got this in hand. Still new to the whole EAC thing.

1837 Coronet Large Cent, Plain Cord, Medium Letters.

In PCGS OGH, and they have it as an AU-50 with no other notes on the label. I'm using this to try to practice both attribution and also photographing through a loupe.

Does AU-50 hit this coin right on the money? It does have a bit of red left but not much.

I have this as an N-4, after trying out my new copy of Newcomb's book. No matter what I do, the die cracks are nearly impossible to photograph, but they are clear as day under 10x. The crack matches exactly for an N-4 (3rd through 7th star then over the top of 8) with the reverse leaves in the correct positions for that die as well as the crack between the F in OF and the AM in AMERICA and the broken curl ahead of the ear.

Does the relative difficulty in seeing the cracks with the naked eye mean that this coin came from an earlier or later die state?

Thank you for reading and looking, and I am very interested to hear your opinions and any insight you can provide me as I jump into the EAC waters. :)

very nice looking coin. N-4 looks right. Celtic needs to come out of vacation retirement to comment!

Very nice coin. Yeah, I'd say you got a fair grade on it. I'm dizzy from looking at your pics though.

Apologies, edweather. I'm still learning how to photograph coins, it's difficult for me; I have ET/FT and my hands shake quite a bit, especially with load on them, so I'm trying to build a photo rig that will work with a loupe and my digital camera. It's very tricky since I have no background in photography, trying to learn how to best optimize macro/zoom/flash/lighting etc.

No apology necessary. Not sure how long you've been doing the Large Cent thing, but I still don't have one as nice as that 1837. Still looking for a worn Plain Cord, they are hard to find.

I got my first large cent 20-25 years ago and picked up a few in low grade or cull along the way, but I am just now learning about varieties, grading, etc. I already got a new copy of Newcomb's book and am now looking for a Sheldon, and will try to join EACS asap :)

The people in this forum are extremely knowledgeable about large cents/half cents and colonials! I am always very impressed. They remind me of a man that used to hang out on ebay's CCF in the old days that dealt in colonials and Confederate issues, and seemed to have a nearly-encyclopedic knowledge of early copper + an expert's eye at spotting fakes.

Nice early copper, and the grade certainly looks right to me.
