This is a great find! I remember when this variety was first discovered, the finder contacted me, told me what he found and asked if I wanted to buy them. I said no, that there were already a 1998 and a 2000 and that adding a third date to the mix of those I already had for sale in my CW and NN ads would just make the variety appear commonplace, as if they could be found on all dates for the era. When he said he only wanted $5 each I thought about it for a moment and decided to take the "chance" on a variety that I felt could have turned out to be common. So I purchased 50 for $250. I sold most of that 50 in one day through a mention of them on USENET's rec.collecting.coins for $25 to $35 each. I figured I'd sell on of two but they flew out the door! As prices soared upward, I adjusted my price accordingly. When they reached the $100 level the fellow offered me another 25 pieces and I paid $25 each for those. Shortly later, another fellow found around 100 of them selling 50 to me and 50 to another dealer, with the owner saying I paid more than the other fellow because I got the cream of the crop roll. At that time I never would have known the coin was going to eventually reach up into the $750 range for MS65s. It's dropped back some since then but out of the 150 or so pieces of this variety I've been able to acquire over the years, I still have most of the very top grades that I feel are MS66 to MS67 (about seven or eight of them that still need to be graded).
It's been my pleasure to see and be the first to report upon the discoveries of the 1992, 1992-D, 1998-S and 1999-S Close AM varieties and the 1999 Wide AM. It's been an even greater pleasure to be able to put one of each of all of the Close and Wide AM "better" varieties in my collection. I think the neatest 1999 Wide AM I found was the one that was Off Center picked from a local dealers table for about $2.50.
