Hello all, I am rather new to the hobby and unsure of what I have. Is this indeed a WAM? Also the coin looks horrible, if it is a WAM is it collectible in this condition? Is there a way to clean it without detracting from the value? Thanks!!

It does look like a WAM. The FG appears close to the Memorial and the A in STATES appears to be mid way between the two Ts (is it?)

I would see what a soak in acetone would do - might help a little...

also, to CCF!

Welcome to CCF. Congrats on the discovery of your WAM. I might add the 1999 is the hardest one of the 3 to find. Don't know about the cleaning part, but I am sure you receive good advise from someone on about the subject.

Yes the A does appear to be centered, hard to tell with all the gunk on there though.

Congrats, definitely a 1999P WAM.

Regarding "cleaning" I would also recommend soaking the coin in acetone (100% Pure) to see if it helps to dis-lodge the stuff on the back.

Do not attempt to " CLEAN" the back by trying to scrape/remove by scrubbing etc away the black material etc, as this will surely destroy any numismatic value of your coin ( IMHO!)

Another suggestion would be to PM member "BAD THAD" and ask for his expert opinion if Verdi-Care would work on this coin.

Good luck and congrats again on your find!

Nice one! Try acetone soak as mentioned above and see if the gunk dissolves. Keep the acetone away from kids and animals and follow precautions when using.

Use a small glass or stainless steel container as it doesn't take much. Also cover it as it will evaporate quickly if not.

Don't see any splits in the copper plating, but if you do in hand after soaking, I'd tuck it away in a 2x2 and seal it in a Ziploc baggie. Thanks, Doug.

edit: I've never had a problem using acetone under normal lighting, but my preferred container is stainless steel and stays covered so no light gets in.

But read something about bright ambient lighting and acetone can have a toning effect on bright shinny copper. That said I've not seen any effect thus far on my own.

It looks like it has been in the bottom of a cup holder in a car, and had coffee or pop spilled on it. It may be easy to clean up.

It is a WAM,congrats. As to cleaning:pure acetone for maybe 15 minutes then a very used soft toothbrush under running water. Practice on some junk coins first.Very nice find.

Not sure about your information about ambient lighting? Could you post where this information was.

The toothbrush would be ok on this coin but, a softer touch would be a Q-tip.on any other more valuable coin.

Acetone 1st then Verdi-Care.

As for your question regarding whether this coin is collectable in the condition its in, I image it would sell for at least $50 even as is. If you can get the gunk off the coin safely the value would easily rise to around $70 or so.

Adding my to you ... and concurrence that this is indeed a valued 1999 WAM LMC.

Noting to add to the already solid advice on using (pure) acetone to hopefully remove the gunk.

Personally ... I would skip the tooth brush and use Q-Tips.

bpoc1, I believe I first read it in this topic. Scroll to the end or the last 2 replies past yours for more info. Thanks, Doug.

SheltieGuy1966, Follow up on cleaning. Hopefully the gunk will dissolve and not require extra effort more than a second rinse acetone.

Key is leaving a little gunk will not hurt the value as much as a rub or a scrub mark will.

If extra effort is required or desired then a green thorn from a rose bush, soft jewelers brush, softest babies tooth brush, or a Qtip can help dislodge stubborn gunk.

The lightest touch (no scrubbing) is recommended as its easy to get carried away and do damage that can't be undone to the coins surface.

Hello from another new member. Just posted my first discussion topic today as well. I auctioned off an average circulated (no gunk on it though) 1999 Wide AM on ebay several years ago, and it ended up selling it in the mid $80 range. Also, as there's generally a few being sold on ebay at any given time, you might want to take a look there to see how they're doing -- especially if similar in wear and appearance to your coin. Congrats on your find. Must have been a great feeling to see that space between the A & the M.
