Several years ago, in 2002, I was in Afghanistan, serving in the military. I was outside of the base, when I saw a little kid with a coin that looked very interesting to me. I offered him everything I had in my pocket -- $5 USD, and he accepted. I've held on to the coin for years, never really thinking much of it until my mother reminded me about it a few days ago. Long story short, I don't know if it is genuine. I don't know much about coins, nor do I collect them, but this certainly looks/feels old. Any thoughts on this? Real/not real?

Sorry, but it's a pretty bad tourist fake.

I figured as much, but at the same time, It seemed worth investigating. AF is not exactly a "tourist" destination, so it made me think perhaps there might be some validity to it.

The design is too crude for the coin to be contemporary, plus I don't think they put English writing on gold coins in Medieval Afghanistan

Quote: AF is not exactly a "tourist" destination Good point. Scratch "tourist" from "bad fake." Stylistically - and price-wise - it's all wrong (for, presumably, an Arverni gold stater), including the script that would be more at home on a vintage Grateful Dead poster than on an ancient coin. At least you're only out $5 - many folks, including a number on this board - have been taken for a lot more at one point or another.

The design is unlike any for pictures I have seen for Vercingetorix coins. A tourist fantasy but still worth keeping, because it may be made from gold!
To get an idea of typical design style, try Google Images: 'vercingetorix coins'.
