Hi all!

I got what I think is a good deal at my local coin shop here in Oslo, I bought these three coins for about 45 USD. The guy who sold me these had no knowledge about these coins at all so I really dont know much about them. Also my knowledge about roman coins is minimal but I find their history very interesting.

So I really hope some of you fine people can help me or put me in the right direction!

Coin number three is made of silver and have some faint letters down in the bottom that says "ROMA" so I'm guessing it it a roman republican coin?

The other two coins are big and are made of bronze.

Coin nr. 1 is approx 27mm
Coin nr. 2 is approx 29mm
And coin nr. 3 is 18mm

Thank you all for your help! I really appreciate it!

I have good news and bad news.

The bad news is that the bottom coin appears to be a cast fake of a republican coin.

The good news it that, even taking that into account, $45 is still an excellent price for the two Sestertii. The left one doesn't have the name, but off the top of my head, I'd suggest Volusian. In any case, the reverse is PAX AVG (Peace of the Augusti). On the right is Claudius (perhaps an Assarius instead of a sestertius, as its copper, not brass),the reverse is CONSTANTIAE AVGVSTI. A nice reverse as it predates Constantine by some 250-300 years (if I remember my dates correctly).

Thank you for your help Ben!

I took your advice and went to a different coin shop and they said the exact same as you did, the coin was indeed false! So I went back and got a different roman republican coin. The new one is a lot nicer so I'm really glad you helped me out! :-D

As the last ones they couldn't really tell me much about them. So I'm asking you again if you know anything about this new coin?

Thank you very much!

An interesting one - they serrated these coins (often called Serrati) to prevent forgery.

The coin reads ROMA on one side and L MEMMI GAL on the other (this is the issuers name). The obverse head is Saturn and the reverse shows Venus in a biga with a flying, wreath bearing 'cupid'. Its pretty much agreed that this was issued in 106 BCE by a member of the Memmia gens, but the L and GAL is not so clear - it seems to be agreed that the full name is Lucius Memmius Galerius, but Ive also found Lucius Memmius Gallus and some sources which dont give anything more than an L for Lucius.

The fake reports didnt turn anything up, so I think this one is fine.

Thank you so much for the info! :-D

I gave it a quick search on ebay and they sell them for around 150-200 usd in pretty much the same condition as mine, so I'm really glad they gave me this coin instead! :-D
