This is a fairly rare coin from the Wu Dynasty. Some severe inflation was occurring at the time, and this coin reflects the inflated nature of the coinage of the time. The translation of the coin's inscription is "Great Coin Value 500," which gives this coin a denomination of 500 Zhu, which is about 50 times its metal value.

These were cast under the founder of the Wu Dynasty, Emperor Da Huang, in 236 AD. The high value is likely because the state needed a way to pay its soldiers during this very turbulent time (the Three Kingdoms Period) of China's history.

Another interesting factoid: due to the highly-inflated coinage of the Wu kingdom, counterfeiting was rampant and very profitable. To counter this, the rulers of the Wu ordered the populus to turn in any bronze ware they had in order to deprive them of materials for counterfeiting.

I paid just a bit under $25.00 for it, which I believe is a good price. These are fairly rare which is why I have some concern. I feel it is genuine, but I'll let those more familiar with what real patina looks like give their opinions. Size is 29.2mm, which is about right.

Interesting coin. I know these were issue in four denominations 5, 100, 500, and 1000. From the appearance of the casting and patina the coin looks good.

interesting coin! I thought this was a wang mang coin, he has a very similar one... but it looks like the symbol on the left is different than his.

here's one of them from a vcoins seller...

The reason they look similar is because Emperor Da Huang based these coins off of the Da Quan Wu Shi coinage. I actually have 8 of them, all different, and I am looking to buy two more.

I've been collecting medieval Chinese cash coins for a few years. Although I don't consider myself an expert, I am very familiar with them.
TypeCoin971793, if you don't mind saying, who did you buy it from? Sometimes knowing who the seller is can give one confidence in their purchase. And of course the opposite.

@ tenacious

I got it here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/20137944191...RK:MEBIDX:IT

I have never had any problems with this dealer, nor has anyone else to my knowledge.

Your a brave person personally I would never buy any coin from China. This coin looks real, but the Chinese are so good at making fakes of their ancient coinage I would have serious doubts about it.
