Hello everyone,
My name is Michael, I am new to this forum and still fairly new to coin collecting. This past weekend I bought this 1846 large cent, and having no prior knowledge of this type of coin... I bought it thinking I had just gotten a great deal. However, upon doing much research, I think it is too good to be true. I measured it at 10.48 grams. If better photos are needed please let me know. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Michael

Thank you for the response. What would normal coloring look like? these coins were made of copper, correct?

Yeah, the pics are a bit dark, but it does look recolored. Still, it has EF details, and if you got it real cheap, it's still a good deal. Check ebay and you'll learn about the colors. It can be a bit daunting at first, as copper can have many colors, but after a while you'll get a good feel for it. Here's a coin I just bought and I think the color is pretty good.

Yes, there definitely is a clear difference in the color, and please correct me if I'm wrong, but are you saying that mine may still be authentic, but just recolored?

Yes, it looks real. If you don't mind, how much did you pay for it?

Not at all, I paid $20 for it. At the time I thought with the condition it was in I had gotten a real good deal

If I ever saw "chocolate brown", this is it! Could well be okay - take it to a show or your local dealer for some opinions. Nice pick-up.

Thank you guys for your comments, will an acetone bath take away from the value? Or is there no value due to re coloring?

does look recolored. If you use acetone it will most likely show a cleaned coin with a much shinier appearance. I don't think the value would be affected. 20 bucks is a decent price for a coin with that much meat on it.

the acetone will not hurt the coin or its value......it may reveal other imperfections in the surface or it may reveal a nice xfish coin... personally, I think it would help the appeal of this one....
