I just happened to notice that a Italy 1923R 2 Lire I have is highly magnetic. This has me baffled. I tried a U.S. nickel with same magnet and there was no attraction at all. I'd appreciate any insight.

Hello and welcome.

The US "nickel" is made of cupronickel, which is a non-magnetic alloy (75% copper, 25% nickel).

The Italian coin is made of pure nickel, which is magnetic.
