I have a question, and hope some of you can help me.

I was looking at the price guide of some silver eagles (pre-2000), and noticed HUGE differences between the PCGS price guide and the NGC price guide.

For example, an MS70 1986 Silver Eagle has a price guide of $21,500 at PCGS:
http://www.pcgs.com/prices/pricegui...+eagles

At NGC on the other hand, the price guide is only $1,000:
http://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide/...-76-desig-ms

These differences can be seen for all pre-2000 coins in MS-70.
Why these huge differences?
I have checked prices of many different coins, and so far, I have always seen "similar" prices, although PCGS prices tend to be a bit higher, but never have I seen such big differences...
Am I overlooking something?

Any thoughts are welcome.

Some recent sales.
As you can see, the price is all over. I would trust an NGC grade over a PCGS grade, but that is a personal opinion.

1986 Silver American Eagle $1 NGC MS70:

Sold for $391.00

1986 SILVER AMERICAN EAGLE- ANACS MS70:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1986-SILVER...047675.l2557
Sold for $8600.00

1986 American Silver Eagle Dollar MS70 PCGS Mint State 70:

Sold for $1011.00

This would be the correct order:

1986 SILVER AMERICAN EAGLE- ANACS MS70:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1986-Silver...047675.l2557
Sold for $391.00

1986 Silver American Eagle $1 NGC MS70:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1986-Americ...047675.l2557
Sold for $1011.00

1986 American Silver Eagle Dollar MS70 PCGS Mint State 70:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1986-SILVER...047675.l2557
Sold for $8600.00

So... $8,600 for a PCGS coin vs $1,011 for an NGC coin?
:)

Probably has to do with populations, PCGS likely hands out less 70's than NGC.

PCGS>NGC>ICG>ANACS IMHO. I've seen NGC undergrade some coins before.

It has entirely to do with population and people valuing TPG populations.

NGC has a 1986 MS-70 population of 1385

PCGS has a 1986 MS-70 population of 32

There in lays people's skewed perception of value. They are not valuing the coin, they are putting a value on the slab. Because a slab with a population of 32, is infinitely more valuable than a slab with a population of 1985 right?

Even though only 1385 out of a million coins submitted made NGC 70 as opposed to 32 out of a thousand submitted made PCGS 70.
(all numbers in the sentence above, totally made up to illustrate the absurdity of assessing value based on slab populations)

PCGS is a designer slab label. It sells for more for the same reason people pay more money for "designer" or "premium" anything: status symbols, a perceived or real high quality or value, or by clever marketing.

Ancient wisdom oft repeated: Buy the coin, not the slab. This is the buyers' mantra.

If there's a PCGS MS69 whatever and a NGC MS70 whatever and you like the NGC MS70 more, why spend the extra money for a lower grade MS69 just because it's in a PCGS slab?

I'll make an exception for set registry building, which is often specific to one TPG.

I love my PCGS coins, but I also love my ANACS and NGC coins. I wouldn't own them if I didn't like them, regardless of what letters are printed on a little label.

This is a good example of the concept of supply and demand. PCGS coins in MS-70 than NGC coins.
