Scored this gem for ~$17 (photos are close but it still looks better in hand). When I look at it the level of detail reminds me of really nice solidii. Emperor Valens was the guy that went into typical-Roman-glory-hog mode at the worst possible time, by not waiting for his brother Gratian and his forces to back him up to face the Goths in Thrace so he could achieve the victory and the accompanying glory for himself. As a result, Valens got himself and most of the Eastern Roman army killed at Adrianople in 378. (thenagain.info) Battle of Adrianople (youthvoices.net)

Nice strike and centering, and well preserved. I love the details on the high points. It's a bargain at $17!! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks guys and nice coin chrsmat. IIRC that was a cleaning job you did, right? Quote: You going to go to the ft.lauderdale coin show in August?
To be honest, I recently did an expensive-ish purchase (shameless bump, has a good history lesson as well if you're interested: https://goccf.com/t/235825 ) so there's a chance I won't be there this month unfortunately. Next time I go I'll definitely PM you to arrange a meet-up. And glad to hear that you are picking up an interest in ancients A warning though: they can be very addicting!

I loved the story on it! Seems like they didn't last too long, hence why it's a rare coin?

I agree, very nice. Great strike to begin with, and great state of preservation. You really got a superb deal, VK.
And, Chris, WOW...fantastic cleaning job! What a payoff for your efforts.
