Just wondering what everyone thoughts are on rainbow toned washington silver quarters. I'm thinking of getting a small set together, like 1948-1964.
are these quarters affordable? I'm not trying to get them for nothing but don't want to pay an arm and a leg either.

Just be careful how you tone them.

White 1964 in the attic in blue 2x2 for four years. Ended up with mottled slightly iridescent brown. Not worth the pic.

Personally I quite like rainbow toning.

Quarters from 1940's up to the end of silver (1964) are considered junk by coin dealers in the US (not always here though)

The term 'junk' basically means the coins aren't worth more than their basic silver value, which is if I can recall correctly about $2.5 for a quarter now.

Good luck putting together that MS-65 or better set of 1940 to 1964 Washington quarters for "junk" silver prices.

I promise you'll have way more than bullion value invested.

My registry set is mostly toners, a few rainbows, lots of golds and blues, and a few blast-white and deep silver non-toners. Here's a couple to look at. Personally, I find toned Washingtons to be quite beautiful and enjoy chasing down some of the more outrageous examples, even at prices above book.

I think you will find them fun to collect, unique, and fascinating, and they're quite a bit cheaper (for non-key dates) than going after toners like this 80/79-S DPL out of my Morgans ;)

I actually prefer Washington quarters to be blast white to slight peripheral toning.

They can get kind of pricy unless you have a B&M store to pick through their bullion. Here is a recent raw sale for example. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1961P-US-90...047675.l2557

I agree with dave700, the thick rainbow peripheral toning looks VERY good on silver Washington's. The colors are very "frosty" looking and nice and raw common dates are too expensive at around $10-20 or so

"Blast white" is the normal appearance of a silver coin as minted, i.e. no toning, patination, or hazing.

I've got a few mostly blast white ring toners (album edge tone.) The best is a 1948-S in raw MS, just the slightest ring of iridescence. It's on my "to slab" list with my next PCGS batch, I think it will pull at least a -63 no prob. I've got about 20 raw blast white BU 50s-60s coins to send in as well that I am hoping to get 66's on.

You can put together a relatively inexpensive set of nicely peripherally toned Washingtons for not much money, as long as you stick to the later dates and avoid varieties.

I don't get offended, T-BOP. No need to worry :) I've got more than enough blast white coins already, though, and it gets boring looking at them sometimes, so I like to inject some toners into the mix. I can tell at a glance which coin is which just by the toning.

It's my "pet series", since I can't collect toned high grade Morgans on anything resembling a reasonable budget.
