Hi guys. I wonder if any of you know did the bombay mint strike any 1942 rupee's using obverse proof dies. You probably wont see the full effect as I see it. But I have tried to capture it as the light hits it. This is definitely struck from a proof die or polished die. Mirror effect is really nice. that deep flashy reflection. I put another 1942 side by side and you can see the stark contrast in the design. everything is much crisper on the prooflike obverse and the luster from the normal 1942 obverse is as you would expect. A sheen covering and not mirrored. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Looks like its just a very nice strike, does not appear to be a proof.

Thanks for reply but as I said it is a deep mirrored obverse.Prooflike. I know the british india coins have P/L restrikes although nothing regestered for the rupee series. I am just wondering if some were struck in error with a prooflike obv die and then changed when it was noticed. Wouldn't be the first time a mix up was made. Reverse of this coin is as you would expect. Just a nice luster with the cartwheel sheen. I guess it will have to be sent away .

Can you try catch the cartwheel lustre in the photos? From how it reflects light in your photo it looks cleaned or polished. I don't think deep mirrored surfaces cartwheel either, since if the coin is very mirror-like the die was polished to be very smooth, no flow lines.

Speaking from experience, I've been fooled by a coin thinking it has original cartwheel lustre but it was actually cleaned to be very shiny.
