This finally arrived today. It is a variety I had long been looking for, 1823 Large Cent with normal date (no overdate), variety N-2. It is recognized as scarce, and more difficult to find than the 1823 overdate, N-1. As far as I can judge from my son's pictures taking with his mobile phone, it has a decent amount of detail left. However, from what I can see, it will probably need an acetone bath to remove some of the excessive amount of debris amongst the devices. Hopefully there will be no corrosion hiding beneath. The surfaces seems otherwise smooth and nicely toned. Your opinions are greatly appreciated. Thanks,   |

great pick up Germanics. Congrats on the rare find. I would say VF20 although I am not seasoned enough at these large cents to really even garner a true guess.

Glad you found one, but I'm thinking the reverse won't clean up very well (looks like ED). Show us the "after" pics, please!

Sharpness is EAC VF20. I would net this down to EAC F12 at present. This could potentially clean up really nicely. A very nice coin for a very tough year.

I think she's a good-looking coin. Needs some Verdi-care & acetone attention.

Thank you everybody for your comments. Much appreciated - I think I agree with VF20, depending on how well the coin emerges from the acetone bath. If it does not, then VG10 to F12 is likely. I will know in a few weeks when I am back home. Hopefully this N-2 will prove a worthy companion to the N-1 I bought many years ago.   |

Back home now from a great vacation in South West Florida (beautiful place!) I was eager to get to work on the 1823 N-2 which was waiting for me. This is what it looks like after a brief acetone dip and some (very) careful use of rose thorns to remove debris. No corrosion or verdigris hiding behind the grime. That was my fear, but it was just organic accumulation. If a grade of Fine 18 were possible, that is what I would grade it. Others may call her VF20. I am happy so far.   |

Rose thorns? Great idea. I've used toothpicks, but the tip sometimes isn't sharp enough. Of course, now that I've moved to Texas, I'll have to opt for cactus needles.

Very nice coin! A wooden toothpick with acetone is my preference.

Before I took a rose thorn to this large cent I did some reading to make sure that is what copper experts use. It actually works quite well if used carefully as it is softer than copper and will not scratch it. They are so fine and sharp you can work on very fine detail. Key is to use it carefully and not rub, just pick gently. Toothpicks tend to be too blunt to get into fine detail, but of course otherwise they work also.
I am sure you will find roses and thorns in Texas OldSkool - isn't there a song that goes 'The Yellow Rose of Texas' by Johnny cash?

I'll have to order some for a florist and ask them to leave the thorns on. Not sure how my wife will react.
