Diocletian / VICTORIA AVG - it appears to show the emperor Diocletian facing victory, perhaps accepting the laurel wreath.

nice chocolate patina. I'm not sure on valure, I was going to say about 30 bucks...but that would probably be for the core common CONCORDIA. looks like this one is a bit more rare.

Try RIC V-2 Antioch 326 for the year 284.
Only Antioch had this combination of reverse inscription (single G) and form of mint mark (XXI in exergue and officina numeral above) This one is for the first officina.

XXI indicates the coin is a aurelianus , an antoninianus from after the reform Aurelianus made, early in his reign. He increased the size and the weight of the antoninianus and improved the composition of silver .To make the difference with the other coins , there was a mark of value :in latin XXI or in Greek : KA .albert

Great info. This forum never lets me down on the info. Which is great as I love history. Thanks for the enhancment echizento, I havnt figured how to pull the dots into position to crop when posting from my phone. Also, I must admit I am sometime confused with descriptions on the ancients. Is there a legend or source that teaches you how to read them?

The Romans had to fit their long legends in a small place so they did use spacing. Given time you will be able tell how to read them. I can't recall off hand but I believe if you look through the sticky section on Books, Download, and Websites there is a guide there.
Any way in the case of this coin the legend is IMP CC VAL DIOCLETIANVS PF AVG.

Ok. That helps a little. Seems the more I learn about Roman coins the more I realize there is so much more to learn.

As for value, this is a better type than most. I do not have the Victoria Avg with a single "G" but I have some with two "G"s. Two of those cost me $200 and $300 respectively in VF+, ten years ago. Yours grades nicely, so is probably in that range. But I am sure prices have softened since then. Not sure by how much.

Diocletian reformed the coinage; he was the last emperor (not counting a rare usurper) to issue this denomination.
The "XXI" is actually supposed to indicate the metal fineness: a base-metal:silver ratio of 20:1. These coins were originally silver-washed, though this wash rarely lasted long in circulation, let alone after burial and cleaning.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

the value of AE coins (beginning by Probus ) dropped a lot since 10/15 years .Actualy , you can buy in VF/EF for about € 15/25 = *17/28.I don t know why , but there is a very big offer for the moment , and I think it is the moment to buy this coins in a higher grade.albert
