Hi there,

I'm completely new to coin collecting and would like some perspective in regards to these wavey lines.

Texture: completely flat and smooth lines; they do not pop up.

I have also taken into consideration that it is dirty, since there are a few lighter spots on the coin. However, lightly rubbing the lines do not do fade it. Any advice on gently cleaning coins are also appreciated.

Is it possible that it is a "rippled" error? I've tried researching but came up with many images with poor quality close-ups. Thanks!

That looks like mere finger or thumb prints---natural etching of some peoples oils or acid contamination.

Thanks for the reply, but any advice on how to clean coins (I guess from oils, too) safely? For my own knowledge for future coins. I don't like how my coins look so dull and old. Thanks in advance

Pure acetone (not nail polish remover!) will get rid of oils (and any other organic contaminants) without doing anything to the coin itself. So, it wouldn't get rid of the print now that it's already discoloured the coin.
The only way to make toned or discoloured coins look shiny again will involve altering its surface, something looked down in numismatics since it reduces the value of a coin.

The number one rule is to never clean coins. This coin is only worth face value from what I can see though, so feel free to experiment on it.

I've found that neither toonies and loonies are worth collecting from circulated coin, unless it's something very unique. Even if they look perfectly bright and shiny and are then stored in 2x2s, most very quickly begin to take on a dull, dingy appearance from being handled in the past. Acetone does not bring back the original lustre, I don't think anything would.

For the most part, buying Uncirculated sets at the lowest possible price has completed my collection. Like many other things, RCM has mass-produced many types of of gift sets, more than the market can bear. Other than from a couple of trusted select ebay sellers, I learned to be cautious of buying loonies and toonies "from mint rolls". I suppose it could be said that all coins originally might have came from a mint roll.....at some point in time prior to circulation. Otherwise it's often possible to buy an entire Uncirculated Set cheaper than what individual "PL" coins are being sold for.
