Yes I have confused the two......I am starting to read interesting reviews..the latest stating the camera Jpeg output is outperforming the D810 and Ds5r Raw files that may well be Hyperbole, and Iam sure in a week or two someone will come out with a different view.. All I know for certain is that I am suddenly finding that the camera works in simple functional ways that its predecessor didn't. EFCS, is less exciting to me than the fact that this new camera just works with out me having to adapt to annoying quirks. I have to say the term back illuminated sensor, although I know exactly what it refers to, seems a most silly term.

Yes, "back illuminated" sounds more like a display technology than one for sensors! But indeed it seems to work and in my view solves quite a few problems in one stroke.

So now Sony has made a viable alternative to the D810. Just not sure yet how, or if, it is able to tether.

AK, you're doing focus stacking with the A7RII, right? How are you doing it? I really don't want to have to focus stack manually.

I am focus stacking with it. not manually! The oly microscope is just for initial focus adjustment. I use both a IR shutter release and a wired, not at the same time. Initially the only way you could use the stack shot was with IR as Cognisys didn't have a wired release. Some time in the last 12months Cognisys produced a wired release. I use the wired release with some lens bellows combinations that, for some reason, do not allow IR to work. I think the issue may be the IR sensor is blocked from receiving the signal. But its not issue free, and this issue is annoying, but I imagine less annoying than the double shutter release when using EFCS on the D810. I have advised Cognsys of the issue, for this current camera and its predecessor, when using manual focus assist( magnifies the subject for focusing 5X and 12.5X) you can not use the normal shutter button half push to turn off the manual assist as it just triggers the shutter (This problem is only with the wired release). The work around I use is I view a previously taken picture( the play button) then return to picture taking mode. I am looking for a Camera monitor screen but with the EVF providing a standard .78 Magnification I am finding that more and more for the focusing I am using the view finder it is so much better than the LCD screen on the camera.I may well first try an angle finder before getting a larger screen, With focus peaking ( highlights what is in focus ) and zebra which helps get the exposure set correctly(I have started using it again with this new camera until I have retrained my eye) the view finder helps me nail focus much more accurately than the LCD screen(I have old eyes).

So it works the same as earlier A7R? I use Helicon so if it is the same I will check on how Helicon works with A7R.

I use helicon as well as I like the user interface. I understand zerene stacker may be the better program( Zerene stacker is probably a little beyond my current skill set)

Why is that? Long ago I used Helicon Focus, but when the 1-year license expired (2009?), I switched to Zerene stacker, which was well regarded by many. I don't find Zerene Stacker any harder to use than Helicon Focus, as long as I let it do everything automatically. I don't use any of the advanced options, nor do I do automatic stacks with anything like the StackShot.

I go beyond automatic settings ( but not far) with Helicon, and I understand that with Zerene stacker it may be possible to control a sony camera directly from a computer using zerenes Robot routine. Its that routine that I believe is v´beyond my current skill set but I plan to try and add it to my skills

So to be clear, you are saying that you can do automatic stack with your A7RII using Helicon as the stacking interface?

If the answer to above is "yes", then how is the camera controlled? For my Canons and Nikons, I plug the camera in with USB interface. Helicon recognizes the camera, and synchronizes the shutter releases with the stepper movements. How is this accomplished with the A7RII in Helicon?

Ahh, so the stackshot is able to natively control the A7R/II via the wired interface? I am not all that familiar with Stackshot controller. Does it have a PC interface or is it done all from the controller box? What connections and what workarounds are required?

My stacking system has a Trinamic stepper so won't work with the Stackshot controller, but I could replace the stepper and use Stackshot controller if it can be done automatically. It is the Trinamic that is keeping me stuck with Helicon since it can natively control the Trinamic steppers, while Zerene cannot.

Sorry for the delay in replying (I am on Holiday) Bycontrol the camera you mean operate the shutter? My stackshot controller has the pc interface( mini USB) but there are currently no third party programs to control the camera and stackshot. That is not because it can not be done but rather the developers of those programes have focused on Canikon. Phase one can control the camera (without live view) As can Sonys Playmemories I believe Sony will make the necessary coding available to developers but the interest isn´t there ( interest of the developers). That comes back to my comment regarding Zerene: Theoretically Zerrene can control another program so it might be possible to control the Sony A7´s that way. For me the stackshot controller is more than enough for my purposes.

AK...would be nice to have a clear answer on this. Are you doing automated stacking? How are you doing it? What steps are required? What hardware is used? What software is used? Can you just write a simple walk-through of the process?

rmpsrmps...You are bringing the psychologist in me out; you appear to be trying to impress everyone with your all knowing wisdom?

.....The cognisys stack shot system is an automated focus stacking system... I have made it quite clear I use stackshot. So the answer is, as it was previously, yes I use an automated system. So I am using automated stacking Now you have what you want so take it away and lecture us all on how cognys´s isn´t really an automated system. I have just realized you are confusing "automated" with PC/Laptop controlled. The stackshot controller is a form of computer albeit basic

I am not the only person to describe Stack shot as automated:
