It finally arrived! I have been waiting almost three weeks for this coin. I have been looking for a denarius of Claudius for a few months and I finally found one. While I hesitate to use the word rare it certainly is quite a scarce coin. In the sold listings I found 5 examples on acsearch and 4 examples in CNGs archives. While the legend on the obverse is very difficult to read I believe I have deciphered enough of it to make the following attribution. The legend on the obverse appears to be counterclockwise which would make this coin RIC 32 rather than RIC 14. Claudius AR Denarius. 50-51 AD. TI CLAVD CAESAR AVG P M TR P VI IMP XI, laureate head right / CONSTANTIAE AVGVSTI, Constantia seated left of curule chair, hand raised to face. RIC 32, RSC 8 BMC 31. I really do not like slabs but it will remain in the slab until I am sure I can remove it without damaging the coin. This will be a very nice addition to my twelve Caesars project. I have 6 left to finish the project: Julius Caesar, Tiberius, Galba, Vitellius, Titus, and Domitian.

For an emperor the was in officer for thirteen years Claudius did not put out a lot of coins. While his AE coins are fairly easy to find, his silver is not. This is a nice find. Are you going to break it out of it's prison?

Yes, I will bust it out of the plastic coffin. I am doing some research online as to the best way to free it. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks Imperator, I am very happy to have this in my collection. They do not come up for sale very often. When they do there tends to be much competition for them.

Denarii of Domitian are relatively easy to obtain in nice condition.
Denarii of Claudius are much scarcer. To keep the price down, lower condition may have to be accepted.

Nero recalled all the silver coins for reissue at 90%. Some have seen that as a nefarious act but it should be remembered that 90% is the modern standard for silver. Pure silvers wears quickly while an alloy of silver and copper is much more durable. As most of the coinage at the time of recall was likely of Claudius and Tiberius the scarcity of these two is not surprising. Caligula has his own reasons ! Augustus was so beloved that most scholars believe that there was a so called 'JFK' effect where the coins with his image just did not circulate after his death. People kept them as talismans.

BTW Nice coin !
In forty years of collecting I have never acquired any Julio Claudians in silver excepting Augustus. Hold off on breaking it out. You can always do it mañana ! Besides if you decide to trade up later it may help being slabbed.

@Sel I am trying to build a set of the 12 Caesars so condition is not the top priority for me. I do however, want the best quality I can afford. There are lots of non-silver coins of Claudius available and the same goes for Caligula. I would like the set to be all in silver if possible. So far it has been possible, not necessarily easy, but possible.

Nice find.
I have noticed over the years that for whatever reason there are more than a few fourree denarii of Claudius out there.
Odd in my mind.
