I bought those in mine first years off collecting, I could not see what tooling was (cry) TRAJAN. AD 98-117 AE sestertius (32mm, 19.35g). Rome mint. Struck AD 116-117. IMP CAES NER TRAIANO OPTIMO AVG GER DAC PARTHICO P M TR P COS VI P P. Laureate and draped bust right / ARMENIA ET MESOPOTAMIA IN POTESTATEM P R REDACTAE. Trajan standing facing, head right, holding parazonium and spear; at feet, seated figures of Armenia, Euphrates, and Tigris. RIC II 642. RARE. VF.aat en Tigris. RIC II 642. RARE. This is a type ive liked since I first heard of it - it has on it the longest legend of any roman coin. Luckily the tooling is quite...forgiving, so I dont think its too badly hurt by it. Id happily own one in that condition, thats for sure.

Unfortunate but we all make mistakes !
My advice is to make it a mere memory ! Sell it to Ben and find a new one. A VF will cost a large sum. But one with a hole in it is better than one that's been tooled.

I will bet you that before this coin was tooled, that a lot of the detail would have been much more difficult to see.
To be very sure tooling certainly reduces the value.
Nevertheless, in this case, I do not think the coin would have been greatly valued in the first place with very heavy , hard encrustation. I am NOT trying to make a case for tooling, but merely pointing out the possibility that perhaps not too much value was lost in this case.
I think that as it stands, it is a rather attractive coin anyway.

It has some eye appeal but the more I looked at Trajans profile the less I liked it. The coin must have been repatinated to a high degree.
That bothers me too much
