Alright then...I meant to say that the anomaly is toned exactly like the rest of the coin and, under a microscope, I cant see where damage may have started or how it became so...thanks for your input.
J h s, from what I see, it looks like something sliced off a layer of metal and it has folded or rolled over. If it were and old strike, the newly exposed metal would had colored just the same as the coin. There is no plating on this coin, the metal composition is a blend. So, newly exposed metal would react the same as the original surface. Jim
Its damage, post mint. the coloring is the same because the coin circulated for X number of years after it was damaged. The damge occured from the top down , so to speak the metal is moved from the upper part toward the lower part of the damage.
Anything that has become smooth is the result of wear.
