I am thinking about making a trip up to northern algonquin park to where one of the old lumber mills used to be and I was wondering if anyone has gone detecting in the park before, do you need any kind of permit or anything? Thanks in advance.

Best to check with the Park authorities first. This link gives the phone number:

According to the help desk, you can bring in and use metal detectors but you can't take anything out of the park, so anything historical you might find you'd have to donate I guess, which makes sense.
