The area on the die that punches the incuse (sunken) part of the inside of a D mint mark is very small and often wears down or just breaks off. When that happens and a coin in pressed, there's no pointy part of the die to prevent that area from filling in. Report this Post to the Staff
SsuperDdave Moderator United States 23522 Posts	Posted 08/21/2015 11:41 am When you consider how a die is constructed, you'll understand how the inside of a mint mark is a little "post" sticking up from the die. It isn't hard to see how such a little exposed sliver of metal could break off under the repeated stress of striking, and you can find filled mint marks in just about every issue.
