My old Seaby has this large Irish copper listed as a Proof. (http://www.irishcoinage.com mentions that these in Copper are Trial Strikes while those in Silver and Gold are considered Specimens).

Are copper ones still considered Proofs?

Thanks,

Spink "Coins of Scotland, Ireland and the Islands" 2003 lists the copper varieties as "proofs".

Slight variations exist depending where the leaves on the top of the head point to.

Price in 2003 quoted as £650 for FDC.

Thank you Anaximander.

What value does your Spink show for this silver 1/2d?

(I have it listed as a 1690 silver halfpenny Proof, struck over a French 1/12 Ecu).

Thanks again,
Bill

Hi.

My Spink lists three possibles. Prices after the descriptions are for F, VF and EF. Catalogue number given as 6591A.

proof struck in silver 250 500 1000
silver proof thin flan 300 600 1250
proof over France Louis XIV 5 sols 400 1000 -

No value given for EF on the last one. No mention of a 1/12 Ecu. Would that be the same as a 5 sols?

You have a splendid coin there. Not sure that his majesty would have been flattered by the profile of the nose though.

Regards

Splendid! (Checking Wikipedia.com, it is likely that 5 Sols was the same as 1/12 Ecu at that time).

During much of the 1600's the (official) breakdown was...
12 Deniers = 1 sous
20 sous = 1 Livre
3 Livre = 1 Ecu
10 Livres = 1 pistole
20 Livres = 1 Louis

This was not set in stone as there were other denominations and values
such as the 1/2 ecu and liard, tournois, double tournois
and the list seems to ge merrily on.
Hope this helped some.

Spink are advertising a new issue of the book I used above, which is due out later this year.
