Hello all,

Recently received this interesting token as part of a larger ebay "junk drawer" lot:

St.-George-Utah-Temple-Trade-Dollar

St.-George-Utah-Temple-Trade-Dollar

I was able to find only one entry online for this particular token:

http://tokencatalog.com/token_recor...eate_uid=820

The mintage of only 500 caught my eye, so I tried to dig up a little more info.

As near as I can tell, this was issued for the re-dedication ceremony for the temple on November 11-12, 1975 (hence the Bicentennial theme). I assume that this was sold as a souvenir and/or to use at church-run shops during the ceremony.

Does anybody have any more info on this token?

Hey Finn. I'm a resident of St. George and while I haven't seen a token like yours, I can tell you that your information is correct. The temple had to be remodeled and refurbished inside, and was closed during that time. The temple had to be re-dedicated by a high-ranking Mormon official to open the temple once again. I'm sure this was a special event in the city and many Mormons would have attended the dedication ceremony. I think it's unlikely that the tokens were sold, but given to those in attendance. Mormons must pay a tithe of 10% of their income for eligibility to attend the temple, so for occasions like this it would not be uncommon for the church to give mementos and small gifts to those in attendance, rather than asking for more money. Having shops set up for an event like this which you could trade these with shops seems very unlikely, my guess would be it was modeled after a Trade dollar from that time.
