Hi all!

I'm a new coin collector based in Spain. Basically I love history of the antiquity and what I want in a coin is to be able to hold a little piece of that history, the beginning of some of the greatest civilizations.

I wanted to start cheap and with something old enough to be interesting. I found this on ebay and won the bid, but now (yes, after buying it, I know) I'm afraid it could be fake. What do you think?

I got it for $16.
Also, what would be some interesting coins to get for a low price? For the moment I'm more interested on simply getting some ancient coins rather than get the rarest and valuables.

Thank you very much! Glad to be here with more "ancient" enthusiasts!

Your coin depicts the Roman emperor Septimius Severus who ruled from 193-211 AD. Your coin is a denarius and is silver. His coin are fairly common and plentiful. Sadly this coin has seen better days but for your first ancient coin, you did OK on the price.

Welome Assur

I don't think it's fake.

The flan is pretty ragged and the reverse is weak, however it has a nice portrait. All in all it looks really nice and ancient.

Most folks here are more knowledgeable than me so wait and see what others have to say.

Again welcome. I like Spain.

i don't thin it's fake either, just bit rough. it's not a bad first ancient coin at all!

there are all sorts of cool ancients you can get for an affordable price. here is a coin I wasn't going to post, but it's kind of up this alley. I picked neat up this neat little greek silver coin last week for 28.51 usd, and that was on vcoins...i didn't score a sweet auction win on ebay or anything, just purchased it outright.

There are pro's and cons to ebay. Obviously you can bag a bargain there sometimes but equally you can get stung.

I like V-coins though and it is probably better for beginners. You can search specific coin types and sort the results into ascending price order. Generally the very cheapest coins will be in terrible shape but as you go down the list they become more and more pleasing. Sometimes a coin will jump out as being particularly attractive, or better value for money than the rest but buying from reputable dealers you will get detailed attributions and assurance that what you are buying is real.

If you like a coin you can add it to your wish-list and come back to it later. The coin that Chris posted was on my wish-list, I think I am growing fond of some of the small silver Greek coins.

Welcome to the ancients, it can become a little addictive and a little expensive... but think of it as a pension.

I also second Vcoins as a good option. I almost exclusively use Vcoins for ancients because I hate having to deal with ebay, greedy people tend to conglomerate there, and I prefer to stick with good honest businesses rather than people trying to make a quick book. Not a bad pickup for the first one at all! I look forward to seeing your next pickups!
