I was looking through my OGP stuff which I have not really looked at for YEARS. This is the 1988 Prestige set, Which happen to be the first thing I ever purchased from the mint. I was in Jr. High at the time. This set has a special place in my heart for that reason. As I open it up... ...The regular issue proofs look great, the silver $ is getting a "haze" on it. Is that simply the silver doing it's thing? In 50+ years will this silver $ turn into a beautiful butterfly or an ugly POS?

The US Proof sets are Not housed in an airtight seal. You can actually pull these apart without any tools and with ease. Your coins Are toning due to this

Hopefully it will look good, but just remember beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I have that same Prestige set and my dollar looks similar to yours. Not as advanced, but cloudy nonetheless.
As stated, the set is not air tight. Actually, there is no seal at all. The lens (inside the outer housing) will open and close easily, no tools required (unlike the regular proof set lens of this era, which had spot welds).

That cloudy hazing will not progress to colorful toning...it will just progress
The only thing that will help is a quick dip in E Z Est....which is not acceptable to a lot of collectors BUT it will work wonders. Key word "quick"

Quote: The only thing that will help is a quick dip in E Z Est... Key word "quick" I will add that if you have never dipped a coin, then this should not be your first. There is a high probability that you will ruin the first coin you dip; you will probably ruin several more before you learn the method. I would leave it alone. Actually, I have left it alone.

Quote: Agreed....and I'm not sure how easily that coin would come out of the holder anyway Very easily. As I said above, it is not sealed at all. I opened my Prestige sets (out of curiosity only; the coins were not removed) back when I was breaking all of my regular proof sets for Dansco albums . I wished the regular lens came apart as easy as the Prestige lens. For the record, I never have nor ever will break apart my Prestige sets. They have high sentimental value.
