I made this discovery last year and shared it at my Money Talks session at the 2015 ANA World's Fair of Money in Chicago.

This is the first and only documented instance in which a U.S. President awarded medals, that was designed and manufactured for the President by the Bureau of the Mint, with the location of the President's Summer White House as a design element (Newport, Rhode Island).

More information of President Eisenhower's Summer White House can be found at:

Medals were designed and manufactured by the Philadelphia Mint.

The custom engraving (50c sized specimen) was performed by David Mann which still has a shop in the Pentagon.
