I know these aren't everybody's cup of tea, but for those who appreciate those quirky coins of Elymais...here's my latest. Orodes II AE tetradrachm, early to mid 2nd century AD Van't Haaff 13.3.1-2A

I have one of his silver coins on my hitlist at the moment but I am glad you showed me this type... maybe I will have get its younger brother (the drachm) since it is much more reasonably priced but I will keep my eyes open because not only do I like the front facing bust design I am sure as a tetradrachm it is a nice chunky and pleasing coin in hand.

Just a quick clarification, David: You may be thinking of Orodes II of Parthia, who did issue tets and drachms in silver (albeit sometimes debased). This Orodes II, of Elymais, only issued coins in bronze - and all are front facing (both tets and drachms).
Elymais was a sub-kingdom of Parthia, and during the second half of its history (1st century BC through 3rd century AD) its rulers were believed to be from the ruling family of Parthia...thus the Parthian names for Elymais kings of this period. Gets confusing, but as a rule: the Elymaean rulers who we know as Orodes (I through V) and Phraates were not the same fellows as the Orodes and Phraates who ruled Parthia...although they may well have been related (they are all probably from the Arsakes family).
If you ask me, you're just gonna have to start collecting coins from both kingdoms. I really don't see any other option for you.

You are right, I was thinking of Orodes from Parthia and I have a silver Drachm that I have my eye on. Indeed it is confusing given the relation of Elymais to Parthia that people with the same name are actually not the same person.
That this is a different guy doesn't concern me in the least, I like the design of the coin and if I see an attractive one at the right price I will probably snap it up.
I am happy to collect from any kingdom, but first I have to collect currency from the United Kingdom - a factor which often slows me down.

bob, that's a wonderful coin. well centered, great details, nice color. most of these are rough and a bit crude, but that one is sweet. so orodes and orodes aren't the same ordoes? since elymias was a vasal state (is that the right word?) of parthia, I assumed they were issuing coins for the same guy. man, that is VERY confusing. here's my orodes ii of elymasi.. 2nd century AD....so orodes ii of parthia, was 1st century bc...ahhhhhhhh...now I see.

Quote: man, that is VERY confusing. Oh, come on, Chris. Confusing? Just because Parthia had four Phraates, Elymais had one Phraates, Parthia had three Orodes, and Elymais had five Orodes (as well as a Kamnaskires-Orodes)? Oh, and Parthia had four Mithradates, while the Kingdom of Pontos had six Mithradates... That's easy to grasp, isn't it? Nice coins, Ann and Chris!
