after 1989, they stopped hand punching the mint mark into the die, so it can't be an RPM, or repunched mintmark. it is called zinc rot. the copper plating somehow gets a hole in it, exposing the zinc. the zinc then reacts with the air and sort of rots away. it is very common on post 1982 zinc cents
