Being realistic it was blooming awful. We were there for a couple of hours this morning. Same guys with the same tired stuff at too much money. No buzz and very few people there. Sad for a city the size of Vancouver.

I ordered a 1991 Quarter yesterday for $11.25 on sale before tax and delivery, quoted as BU MS-63, so I feel OK on that one after seeing what you paid. Nice PL pick-ups Denny. Reverses of the `64 penny (frosted devices) and `64 nickel are really nice. That 2006 set you may want to see if the Penny has the P, one of 233,000. My 2006 Christmas set was all P`s.
You walked away with some good additions to your collection for under $25. When crowds are thin, are the dealers willing to deal a little more ...

How many tables were there? I went in March and there were 8 or 9 tables there with half of them selling stamps.
The location is poor with little public transit and hard to find parking.
I understand the Oakridge Mall is under going renovations but it was much better in terms of walk in traffic. People who shopped there sometimes come in and take a look. At this location no one except die hard collectors will go. And they won't go if there are few dealers.

I was investigating my club doing a show. The principal issue is the lack of a suitable venue.
With Oakridge, you had (in order of priority): 1) Availability of the room from Friday PM to Sunday PM. This is important because only a two-day show will bring in out-of-town dealers. 2) Ground-floor access. This is important for set-up and tear-down. 3) Plenty of free parking. 4) Close to transit. 5) Reasonable cost.
The Nikkei Centre is a nice, clean venue with ground-floor access, but it just isn't available except for Saturday morning and early afternoon.
Does anybody know of any other venues that might fill the bill?

It's really too bad that a city the size of Vancouver, can't support these regular shows. Oakridge is extremely close and convenient for me, the New West location, not so much, and therefore I have never been.

And I would have to say the opposite, for me and for most people south of the fraser, oakridge is not the easiest to get to. Unfortunately I think Dirt detector is right on the money. we have a large population base of several million people in the metro Vancouver area, however we cannot sustain a decent coin show, or maintain more than 1 coin club.
where I have been to the coin show held just across the border in Washington state (Bellingham) and there were about 30 tables, and (when I was there) about 50+ people looking.
This is a small city, yet venders I spoke to travelled up from south Washington state, and regularly come that show.

My plan was to be there, but, as of a few weeks ago a family member was given only weeks to live and I've been very busy since...I'm certainly hoping to make it to the next one though. I think EVRob has hit the nail on the head.

Don't kid yourself the Bellingham show last year was awful as well..........ten dealers and most were very poorly stocked. In comparison to most places, BC is not really the hot bed of numismatics in Canada. The Vancouver area and Victoria as well are just not great coin cities for the most part. Oakridge was a good place for the two day shows and were usually well attended and good for us to set up, even when we had to come from Victoria. The new place, although welcoming and a nice venue, is not the best place for a show and Saturday not the best day to have a one day show. What can be done to make it better and more successful is going to be tough to figure out. Going back to a two day show twice a year is probably a good idea, to help draw out of town dealers again. As to location, it appears that Oakridge will not be an option when it is available again. One idea would be The North Vancouver Rec. Centre on Lonsdale. Some of the best Vancouver shows ever, were held there! Maybe the Richmond area would be a possibility as well. Part of the trouble is the incredible expense of places to rent in Vancouver. It is certainly not for the coin clubs lack of trying.

Does anyone have any experience with coin shows in both AB and BC? (Because I don't - see below)
When the guys at the club told me that the Edmonton coin show was Canada's largest, I couldn't believe it simply because Edmonton is not nearly as large as Vancouver, Montreal, or Toronto... but it sounds as if these large cities are actually too large to be able to host a good show in a central location. Or is it just a matter of finding the right venue and signing the right contract? I am interested to find out more about what makes these shows work (or not work).

You're right on the money there pacificoin, that's been the problem with the one day shows for a few years now, I don't think a change in venue will help much. @ nalaberong, the Edmonton coin show is without a doubt the best in western Canada.

Vancouver has a lot of obstacles, mainly water. for anyone south of the Fraser who would want to attend, means crossing at least one bridge or 2 (or a tunnel) and a lengthy commute. As mentioned above apparently there are venue issues.
I agree that the Oakridge venue might offer a lot, but the issues for people who live at any distance.
I would think that one way to help the shows in Vancouver, would be to start a secondary coin club south of the Fraser. Having 2 strong clubs would be way more beneficial for the whole hobby in the metro area, and thus have more people going to the shows, and therefore drawing more venders, and so on and so on...
I know that is more of a long play to help out any show in the area, but is probably the healthiest.

Silverdon the penny in the O Canada set was a P and that is why I bought it. The only 2006p I've been able to get, and at 8$ for the set I thought it was a good buy. The comment about the same dealers and few choices is correct and a shame for a city like Vancouver. Oakridge was better but is no longer an option with the planned reno. I can only dream about a large 30 plus vendor coin show in this area.
