Hey what do you guys think is a good price to buy a Peace dollar? On ebay they are around $20 BIN for one. Is that too much?

That is a normal price, but be careful you are getting the real deal. Right now, its about $11 melt, so that should be good, but consider your options. It's great that you're looking in to them, they are beautiful coins!

Zeta, maybe for ebay thats the going bin price for common date Peace dollars, but you should check a local coin store or even one of those "We buy gold places" for better prices I know I am finding them at 15.00 as average.

And I agree with Osprey, its a beautiful coin to collect.

The date and condition aree paramount. There a lot of crummy Peace dollars out there that I wouldn't pay close to $20 for.
Rest in Peace

If you are collecting to form a date set, it won't take long to wear out the $20 price for tougher issues. But there are far FAR more "somewhat ugly" and over-dipped Peace on the market that can be had for the $20 range, even for slightly tougher dates.

The key is to determine if you are buying these so you have ONE as a type coin (buy a common date in uncirculated), are trying to form a set (determine your minimum "beauty" level, and stick to it), or just to have "some" which is close to silver stacking - but not quite.

You can't go too far wrong buying ANY Peace for in the $13-$15 range as that's only a few dollars over melt value. At $20, you should start to get into a little nicer collectible coin.

I would say watch ebay and get a sense of the prices. You may be able to get one for best offer or auction for about 10 bucks.

I do want one for the silver value but I also want one because it is a really nice coin to add to my collection. I think when I got a Ben Franklin half in a grab bag that it really got me interested in the older coins.

Seen a post as buying silver dollars at $15. As long as they have dates and no holes I take a semi load at that price. A Peace dollar at $20 is a good buy. I just sold Au's at 21 and sliders at 22. Any Peace dollar is worth 18.

I bet that when prices of precious metals recover from their slide then prices of Peace dollars and common Morgans will start to rise and we will be glad we persisted in buying silver coins when others were giving coin collecting last rites. Rather than hording silver and gold bricks we buy beautiful silver and gold coins. Unless science discovers a golden and silver planet out there in space these metals will still be precious and desired by billions of people. There have been countless boom and bust cycles in gold and silver. There have been two since 2009 recession. Get in at the bottom if you can and just ride it out and get the joy of looking at your beautiful coins until you pass them on to younger collectors one day at a nice profit I am betting. The real fun is collecting them and learning all their quirks and particulars as you fill a set. I would not do it just as an investment. Investing is dull and boring, but highly profitable if done consistently. Collecting is fun and a reward in itself.
