Hi all,
I have had this coin for a while without giving it any attention, just sat in a flip marked Mithradates I.
The reverse is in a poor condition which has made identifying it difficult ( for me anyway )
Here is my best guess,
Obverse - Bust right
Reverse - Horses head right ? 3 lines of text
Ecbatana mint
Sellwood 12.12
Weight - 6.29g, Size - 21mm.

All help is greatly appreciated, TIA.

Good call, Tenbobbit: S. 12.12. While there is a very slight possibility it could be a 12.13 (with the bearded bust reverse), the shape of the reverse motif on your coin is consistent with the way the horse's neckline was rendered on these issues. I'm certain your attribution is right.

Despite the wear, this is a very nice example of a quite rare type.

Sorry to bump an old thread but I need a little help with information on the coin.
I am currently selecting some coins to let go that don't fit into the area/period I am focusing on and this is 1 of them.
I have a full ID but am unable to find any data for historic sales and there isn't any on sale right now so getting a value/ price is proving troublesome.
All of the examples I have been able to find are either in Museums or private collections with little info attached.
Having never sold a coin like this I would very much like to get all my info and pricing in order before I proceed, any help is greatly appreciated.

Well, good question (how to price these), Tenbobbit! As I said before, despite the wear and pitting, this is a good example of a very rare coin. Even Schatz over at Forum, who has the most extensive collection of Parthians that I've ever seen online, does not have a Sellwood 12.12. Having said that, I suspect that few collectors - even Parthian collectors - would understand its significance. Fred Shore's 1993 price guide is of no help, since he clumps all bronze Mithradates I "large flan" types together with an "R2" rating, and a $200 value for this (fine) grade...he does not distinguish between the varied reverses of Sellwood type 12's, unfortunately. Yours is rarer than others.

Here are a few links with a diversity of prices...there's neither rhyme nor reason here, reflecting the fact that no one seems to have a clue how to list these:

$495 (listed as an AE 4 chalkous, it's a tetrachalkous, like yours):
http://www.parscoins.com/itemdetail...S&item=12262

$29! (someone got a sweet deal):
http://munzeo.com/coin/kings-parthi...ana-21981930

$150 (despite the incorrectly listed denomination, it's another tetrachalkous):
http://www.noble.com.au/auctions/lot?id=115513

I would take it off your hands if I collected Parthian AE's, but I only do the AR's. Best wishes.

Many thanks for all the information Bob
I agree with your statement regarding the selling prices, hard to know where to start
Anything like the 3rd coin price would be fine but it will stay at home if it is only worth the 2nd coins sales price.
I will let you know how it does when I list it.
Again Bob, many thanks for all the info and help
