I sent off a beautiful 1894 Barber half dollar to get graded, sure it would grade well. You can imagine how disappointing to see "altered surface" on the NGC website tracking. There is no further info available. I inherited this coin and have no way of knowing what was altered. If I needed to guess, I would say it has something to do with toning, since the shade of toning was a little unusual. My question is: are there any conservation services that would restore the coin? It is a great coin, and such a shame.

I would highly recommend NCS after what they did for my 1928 Peace dollar.....it was heavily tarnished from being in a safety deposit box for years and NCS did a beautiful job on it and it came back no issues au55 grade. It is definitely worth the money to have it conserved if you think it warrants it

Thank you. I spoke to NCS but they are doubtful that conservation is possible since the NGC side of the company should have referred it for conservation if they thought the coin could be restored. He did say that he would try to find out what the graders meant by "altered surface". Thank you for the info, though, I am sending a copper medal to them instead.

Before anything, wait until you get the coin back. Then if you still want answers, contact them again about exactly what they mean. From what I see, nothing is wrong. Don't forget many people have coins sent to different TPGS's due to not liking one or the other's opinion.

As I was reading down I had that thought, but seems you figured it out.

That is good to know. We can all learn a lot if we knew what it is they claim to see.
