I've been trying to find a site that explains the differences between the Sheldon varieties of the 1800/79 large cent. I've seen a few sites that describes a few of the varieties, but I haven't been able to piece together a full set of defining characteristics. Does anyone know where I might find a site that has that?

There really isn't a website that will do this explicitly. You have to look and compare photos of each of the Sheldon varieties to attribute using only the internet. My suggestion is to buy a book. Your best bang for your buck would be the new Half Cents and Large Cents by David Bowers. It doesn't give you any variety information on middle and late dates, but it should get the job done on all the Sheldon varieties from 1793-1814.

Thanks. I had found that site and had looked at the pictures pretty closely. I'm primarily having trouble finding differences between S-195 and S-196, but am also curious as to what the NC-1 and NC-2 varieties look like.

Check out NGCs VarietyPlus. They have pics of 196 and 195 and NC-2. They list the NC-1 as the B-1. Heritage has a couple of the NC-2 in the archives.

You can also try use the PCGS website to get Walter Breens book for Early US cents. Just go to PCGS resources and then books online.

For pictures you can't do better than these pages

http://images.goldbergauctions.com/...ter=3&page=2

http://images.goldbergauctions.com/...ter=3&page=3

Lots 356 through 369 That is all 11 overdate varieties for 1800 with nice large images (click the coin image to get the large images for the variety.)

For descriptions of the varieties go here

http://www.pcgs.com/books/earlycents/1800-003.aspx

and

http://www.pcgs.com/books/earlycents/1800-004.aspx

And the pages in the book that cover each variety (sorry I'm not going to track each of those pages down and provide links. The images in the online book aren't good so use the books descriptions ad the auction images.
