I don't see anything unethical here if the lady had a current price guide book in hand. She then should have or would have known the approximate book value. She was runnign a yard sale and in the spirit of yard sales, wanted to move the item quickly. GREAT deal and I would not feel the least bit guilty.

Now, if she didn't have a price guide, I probably would have asked her for a number first- what did she want for them. If she really was exceptionally low, I would have given her more than her low ball number and used the opportunity to educate her. I really hate to see folks like this get ripped off because they have no knowledge of something, just like folks get ripped off on cars because the dealerships put a $5 car seat protector on and pad the bill by $250.

I have resisted replying to this because it really is to no avail. For some reason, I have been drawn back to it a number of time, so here it goes. Having read the posts, I agree with everyone in theory and it is probably the experiences in my youth that make this one (and others) feel like a knot in my stomach.

My father was a police officer and was killed in the line of duty. I am unbelievably proud of the fact that his name is on the fallen officers wall a the the Smithsonian in D.C. After his death, my mother struggled immensely to raise 4 young children. I watched her work her day office job and then wait table in the evenings to make ends meet. I still remember the day she sold her wedding rings at the town pawnshop because the rent was do the next day. Every time I see something like this transaction, I have to wonder if it is out of desperation.

Understand I am judging no one, I guess I am just a big softy. Today, I have lived a fairly successful life, been blessed in so many way and I alway try to pass that on when possible. I just would have a hard time sleeping for worrying about whether she got the rent paid.

Now, let me at a dealer and I will barter until I am blue in the face.

Again, I'm not claiming anything unethical was done in this circumstance. Just because the lady has a price guide doesn't mean she knows how to use it. These could have all been things passed on to her, and she could really care less about them. So be it, it was a great deal.

My only point was that I would have asked her price, not just offered $400 after doing the math in my head. It's all water under the bridge now anyway, and we don't even know the actual conversation nor do I care to. I'm not trying to give anyone a hard time, and my posts were not ill will towards anyone. Just my take on the situation as I read it. I think it's great that there are still deals out there to be had.

whoa I think this post has gotten way outa hand, it started out as a good deal at a yard sale and has turned into people struggling to feed their children with money from silver dollars. I think this will be the last time I post a great find

Don't worry so much bigcartwheels. It's just a healthy discussion! We love that you got a great deal!!

Some of us like to go off on tangents. There are separate threads here on ethics, and maybe somebody will start some hypothetical scenario ethical threads. Those would be interesting dicsussions. I personally do not believe anything unethical happened in your case.

Rest in Peace

Ethics on coin "deals" do come up in threads quite often. The only difference I see here is that in those other threads the poster has solicited an opinion on the ethics of the deal. I think this was just a "wow"!! great buy thread. Bigcartwheels, please continue to share your experiences. As already stated, no one was being judgemental, just throwing out some thoughts on the situation. Peace, Mike

That does seem to be a low price payed for the silver dollars. You didnt force her and she sold them so you got a great deal. I see this happen all the time at my local flea market, accept not as good a deal as yoy got. Ive done it myself with coins and sportscards. You make a offer and they either accept it or they dont. Congrats!

Things like this are never cut and dried. Some feel you should have offered more, and perhaps some are saying under their breath (?) that they would have offered half.

She could have said no, or could have counter offered. As long as you didn't lie to her about their worth.

Big, I most certainly did not mean to cast any disparaging thoughts on your find and was not judging anything. Thats' not my responsibility. My intention was to convey how I personally weight decisions. There was no right and wrong. You have to understand, for me, any great deal from someone who might not know what they are doing doesn't fit. That is my baggage, not anyone else's. Please accept my apology.

I've been to a few yard sales and flea markets, and I never seem to find that sort of bargain.

I take no offense to anything that was said, I just thought we were getting of the realistic train. I would love to list what I got, but some of the key dates, might cause more disparaging remarks. Okay just a few 1890 CC, 93, 93-0,95-0 and s, 1901 dbl die reverse.

BCW,

Those are some amazing dates and varieties. I'm always the guy that buys the scratcher ticket just before or after the big one.

Promise you'll post some pictures.
