I was lucky to have recently purchased this coin for $50. This is the 1928-P Peace Silver Dollar. It appears to be in good shape. This is my first Peace collection I am putting together, as I typically collect Morgan dollars. I do not know how to grade Peace dollars as well as I do Morgans. Any and all grade opinions are welcomed. Thank everyone in advance for your thoughts on this coin. Wanted to see if the grade warranted getting slabbed or not. *

AU-50 if the mint mark has not been removed. The dark tone in the mm area makes it tough to tell for sure. Can you get another photo close in on where the S mint mark would be?

Thank you all for your replies. I was thinking it may have been cleaned though was not positive. I am using my back-up camera and it is not the greatest at focusing on detail. I did look over the area with a magnifying glass and there are no indication that the mint mark was removed.

There is an easy way to authenticate a 1928 Peace dollar. Look at the rim by looking straight onto the edge. You will see one of two things. The first one is what you will see on a genuine 1928 P. Notice how the rim is very wide and shallow. A 1928 S will have a rim characteristic of the second one: thin and sharp. Compare it to a 1922. There is a very noticable difference.

You can see it was cleaned by the hairline scratches on both sides...But the details is high au/low MS...Still for $50 you cannot go wrong. Nice score.

Highly polished and lost some of that by "recirculating" with other contact of other silver coinage I would assume.
Toning is left over from cleaning, sometimes cleaning can result in a "natural" tone in some sense.

Thank you all for your comments and explaining how to know a coin has been cleaned. I am happy I was able to get the key date of the series for about 2x what a 1922-P is going for!
