Whatever authority you think you might have goes out the window as soon as you log on to ebay.

I would not be too hard on the vendor in question. I think that he has learned a lesson about auction backlash and that a lot more goes on behind the scenes when an auction has problems than just a neutral or worse feedback rating. The vendor DID answer each of my 5 emails to him, each building on his responses to me. He remained civil, but stubborn, in the whole 4-5 day back and forth. Anyone that answers 5 emails promptly isn't trying to actually screw someone over .. he's trying to CYA or actually learn something without admiting errors. By now, I hope he has bought a reference book with photos. I can think of no "reference" that doesn't have pictures of Obv 1 & 2 large cents like he mentioned. I guess that he hasn't gotten to reading my 6th email to him thanking him for his time and relisting his 1884 as an Obv 2 starting at $2.

What you all were telling me was not in my books and so I thought there was no truth to what you were saying. Sorry, but "honest, sage advice" is hard to come by on the internet and I'm just a little bit suspicious of anyone on ebay after I've been burned a few times. In any case, I apologize for my lack of information and I'm better informed now.

People who do not sell on ebay do need to realize how big of an issue that really is. Quite frequently, anonymous 'experts' will shoot you ebay messages telling you that coin 'x' is actually coin 'y' and therefore worth a fraction, but of course they want to buy it...

The more I have sold through ebay the more I realized how much I do not know, and I have been lucky enough to discover how effective this site is at answering questions on coins you do not have the correct literature or the knowledge to correctly identify or attribute.

The Canadian section of this forum has many of the real experts in the field of Canadian Numismatics come through, and certainly anyone who deals in Canadian material would be wise to stick around and learn from some of the best...

gbvbsite thanks for saying that we sometimes get carried away.

TheCoinHunter, I received this message via ebay from themoneychest-2:
"For your information - It should be noted that you are the subject of one of the largest coin discussion web sites, re your refusal to acknowledge that your listing along with one other is/was incorrect - even after renown experts have pointed out to you the difference in the varieties.."

and this from flint.cda:
"I have posted warnings about your refusal to change your listings on Canadian and US-based foreign coin sites, despite emails from me and others that you are severely misleading buyers. I have also sent ebay emails about your dishonesty .. you'll hear from them. This isn't about out differences of opinion .. this is about purposely misleading buyers ... you should be ashamed. To protect newbies and other people not up to speed, I sent about 10-20 of these to the vendors and ebay every year and you are the first that has refused to change .. they know who I am and my background. Evidently, you don't"

Now if you, as a business owner/coin dealer were to receive messages like these would you not be worried about your online reputation and future business? Furthermore, I did continue to do research even after saying I would not be changing the listing. Ultimately I discovered I was missing a lot of information and what many of you were trying to tell me is in fact corrct. As for becoming a known "junk dealer" I have a good track record on ebay and I consider this an isolated case. It was a mistake, I've admitted to it, and I've corrected the mistake, and here we are. All's well that ends well. Thanks for your concern. Furthermore, I plan to regularly visit this site and may call on the users here for advice if something should come up again. I thank you all for your advice and would like to rely on it in the future should something like this come up.

Okiecoiner, I did take the time to look over the coin several times. Problem is I was using just the one and same book each time, and as I've come to realize that book is not a good reference. I've said this many times over so pardon the fact I sent a copy+pasted form response out, but it gets tiring repeating myself.

Pennyman007, calling it an excuse is in my opinion pathetic, but everyone is entitled to one. Cheers.

P.S. I understand how to normally post on a forum and I will use a more casual format. I just want to make sure I address everyone to clear the air of any remaining concerns. Apologies.

Adding on to above, I did not realize that there's already a page 2 here, and I wanted to say thank you to Okiecoiner for his post here on page 2. Additionally, I don't think I said my book has no pictures, and if I did I misspoke. Its not that there are no pictures in my book--it does have them--but it doesn't mention every marker. And yes I've learned my lesson.

jdmern, I intend to stick around and see what I can learn, thanks.

That listing ended on the 7th. Not sure how you found a link to a pulled listing.

Listing is changed, SWCoins has admitted the error, and said 'Apologies'.

Glad that's over. Now get off your high horses and let's throw a welcome party!
