I have a 1/10 oz gold eagle which is very similar to the size of a dime. There are other gold coins that are very similar to the diameter of ordinary circulating coins. Has anyone ever found a cold coin while CRH? I sure hope I will someday, that would be better than finding a 1909 S VDB Edited by Hello There 10/08/2015 2:06 pm

I don't have any gold coins so there is no chance of me accidently mixing one in with any change I am rolling; and, if I ever do get one I would definitely not keep it in my change jar. It is probably more likely to find one in a pile of foreign coins which LCSs just dump in a bin, assuming that it is all base metal since the 1950s.

How do you differentiate brass from gold when going through the foreign coins?

I think I have heard of at least 4 separate instances of gold being found while CRHing.
Would have been really cool to get into it during the 30s-70s when people were trying to pass off gold US issues as small change, due to the urban legend that one could be arrested for possessing gold after 1933. I remember someone recalling that their father found eagles and double eagles shoved into vending machines that took quarters and half dollars.

Found bunches of cold coins but never and gold ones beside plating. I'm retired from roll hunting though. It got too hard and ebay was a much more entertaining hunt with thrift stores. This week alone I was sell a item I got for a dime for $35.

Most coin dealers are pretty good at eyeballing gold, so it has to be pretty well tarnished to get past them. Another point they look for is the year. Mexico stopped making circulating gold coins in 1949, and by 1950 no one was making gold circulating coins anymore, so if it is pre-1950 they might check it out more closely. Europe had largly ceased minting silver coins after WWII so they are assuming that European coins are nickle based after 1950. What is likely to get pass them is a special commemerative coin that is silver or gold. The silver I have found have mostly been commerative European coins, I have never found any gold. The other bargains in the foreign coin bins is One and Two Euro coins for Twenty-Five cents. That is a good exchange rate, and I buy them for family and friends taking trips to Europe. The occassional loonie or toonie for a quarter is a fair exchange rate as well. Do not buy the $500 or $1,000 Mexican peso coins from the 1980s however, the peso was devalued by a factor of 1,000 in 1993, so only the Nuevo Peso (New Peso) minted after 1993 has any value. None of the LCS seem to keep up on global exchage rates, so that tends to be the real source of value.

I would love to say that I've found a gold coin in a roll, but so far it has not happened. Never say never!

Given the choice between my Ducat and an S VDB I would take the Lincoln Cent! Fun to find a fluke coin though. Good luck on the hunt folks!

That would be great if it were true. The Ducat is only worth around $120. Maybe a down payment? Lol

I have found a gold chain on the beach. Not while detecting though.
