I found this old crusty coin metal detecting the other day. It is 38 mil in diameter. I don't have a scale to measure it yet. Appears to have an eagle on front with letters" ANA" on right side. Opposite side of coin has what appears to be some sort of spangle. Any help appreciated.

Looks smaller than 38mm, which is the size of a US Silver Dollar. A Cent is 19mm so my guess is that this is either 26mm (silver 2 Reales) or 33mm which would be a Mexican silver 4 Reales (1824-1870).

Sizewise that should be a 4 reales coin. Nice catch, I wouldn't even have though about that coin at first.

Looks a little too rough to be a silver coin--I wonder if this is an old contemporary counterfeit with the silver casing broken off?

Finn - I guess it's possible, but honestly looks just like a wiped silver coin.

The coin was found in the bottom of a narrow stream that cuts through an old estate yard that had been vacant but well maintained since 1972. There was also civil war skirmishes on the property. Could it be silver, but looks this way from all the years in the creek bed?for the life of me I can't pull a date from it. Any suggestions?

Being in a stream explains the environmental damage. I figured the coin had just been buried for many years. These Mexican silver coins circulated in the United States with US coins, due to the shortage of US coinage in the early to mid 19th century.

In the second picture at the bottom, directly above the midpoint of the letter W in WE appears to be a 6, which looks like the last number of the date, so could be 1836, 1846 or 1856, unknown mint mark.

Thanks for pointing out the possible date. I didn't see that before. Any tips on cleaning it enough to try to pick a date? I know this coin is pretty toasty.
