I think it's a details coin, TBH. It looks to have gotten a bit of "road rash." (About what you would expect for a $3 coin.)

The Mint had a real devil of a time with non-silver and non-gold coins in this era -- excepting IHC's to an extent. The 3c nickel, 2 cent pieces and 5 cent Shield nickels all are notorious for major die problems. This one's not even the worst I've seen, they come as far as having entire chunks broken off (big Cuds.)

I agree with worn dies.

I think light strike as well as worn dies.
What was the total number of coins produced, and the number of dies used to produce them?
All high points indistinct, but detail lower in level to the fields better, the fields themselves are in good condition.

Wear wise only, perhaps EF45.
