This is an obverse image of a 1960 Eisenhower June Visit Award Medal. This is a Eisenhower Class 2 award medal. Catalog as DDE-C2-05 in the book: Authoritative Numismatic Reference: Presidential Medal of Appreciation(tm) Award Medals 1958 - 1963, ISBN 1511786744 .
This medal is:
1. Designed and manufactured by the U.S. .Mint in Philadelphia. 2. The work of Frank Gasparro. 3. 38.1 mm in diameter. 4. 2.98 mm in thickness. 5. 90% silver and 10% copper. 6. Net circulating mintage of 1,428. 7. Awarded by President Eisenhower during his first leg of his Far East Tour from June 14 through June 20, 1960. 8. The location of use by President Eisenhower includes: (a) State of Alaska (b) Philippines (c) Republic of China (also known as Formosa or Taiwan)
This medal and its series has never been documented by the U.S. Mint nor the White House. The previously mentioned book is the first to document the entire series for collectors.
The name of medal series has evolved from "Original Ikes" to "Dwight D. Eisenhower Appreciation Medals" to "President of the United States (POTUS) Appreciation Medals" to "Presidential Medal of Appreciation Award Medals". The reasoning in the multiple name change was that President Kennedy also had similar medals produced by the U.S. Mint. However, the primary reason is to remove all commemorative connotation to these Presidential medals. These presidential medals were awarded by a sitting U.S. President and only while serving in that position. One could not simply buy the medal from the U.S. Mint, it had to be awarded by the President. Most original awardees and heirs treat the medal as a presidential heirloom and are passed on to the next generation. These medals are difficult to locate and obtain.
I own the image. I own the medal. The medal is in my personal collection. This medal is the plate medal in the previously mentioned book (page 46), and I am the author of that book.
The obverse design prominently features:
1. Stars which represent the original thirteen American colonies. 2. Two burning torches that represent the concept of liberty. 3. Wording "WITH APPRECIATION FROM". 4. Incuse facsimile signature belonging to Dwight D. Eisenhower the 34th President of the United States.
This is the entire series Eisenhower Class 2 medals. It's hard to believe that no major numismatic reference has ever documented these Presidential Medal of Appreciation awards for over 5 decades.
