http://www.ebay.com/itm/1899-Barber...047675.l2557Bad pics, but I took the risk @ 2.50, haha. Lots of detail, a lot higher of a grade then G, more so like a F-12? Once it arrives I'll post better pics. Obverse appears to have some dirt. Acetone will probably do the trick.

I can't tell if the letters of liberty are all there , going by the detail in the headband and parts of the reverse I'd say it's a F-15 coin if you have a full liberty when you get it in hand .. If not a solid Vg 10 , either way not bad for 2.50 ..

VG something or another. A Barber dime in G. So how does he know it's not in A or Bb or G#?

i think that is carbon spotting on the obverse. For $2.50 its a great addition to any collection for a 116 year old dime.

I'm trying hard to see any letters in LIBERTY. if once in hand there are at least 3 distinguishable ,then I will call it VG-8 TO 10. acetone might not work on those black spots on obverse. lots of meat on this Barber.

Agree, VG-08 details. Still a good price if you like this sort of thing.

I am finding it very hard to agree that this is a details coin just because of the black spots. I could be wrong, this is only my opinion.

Quote: I am finding it very hard to agree that this is a details coin just because of the black spots. Carbon spotting = environmental damage = not making a problem free holder in the market unless it was a very rare and scarce date/mm where there are so few survivors that the market eases its assessment of things.

Incorrect. Often times LWC & LMC with carbon spots 9/10 get problem free grades. I honestly think it's just dirt.

Not with carbon spots like this, I think. Besides, this is not a cent. Those spots look ugly, but a little acetone should life them up if they are just dirt.

I have a few slabbed wheat and Indian cents graded problem free that have light spotting .... It also seems TPG aren't as strict when it comes to problems that would normally warrent a details designation when to comes to lower grade coins ..
