Wow, I'm really annoyed at what happened to you.
fake coins at public auctions ! I would go after the auction house and demand action be taken.

Well I emailed the auctioneer last night about it and got a reply. He will be busy today but will be able to talk more on Wednesday after I confirm with my LCS that these are fake. He says if the coins are not genuine he is confident we can work something out. Hearing that at least makes me feel a lot better.

Fyi, work something out is probably code for I'll refund you in bidding money for a future auction. Glad he's being receptive though.

Yeah we will see what happens.. thanks to Typecoin for spotting this! Another reason I love this forum :) but definitely lesson learned I need to be more patient and to do some more research before buying these earlier pieces. The sad part is that these aren't especially rare dates by any means so being fake is definitely a surprise.

You need to carry a scale, magnet, and Red Book with you whenever buying coins now a days.

You need to stay away from these country auctions. Lots of counterfeit shows up here.

It's sad, but I always assume every coin I see is fake. That is until I can prove it's real. The part about it being a common date makes perfect sense. Any key date coin is going to be looked over with great care. A common date as the OP has unfortunately found out tend to be overlooked and slip through the cracks.

Another thing is that I read somewhere that all the basement slabs that are seized by the government when they raid businesses are resold by those government seizure auctions because legal repercussions over grades are nullified in the auction format. It was a while ago so I may not be remembering it spot on but that was the jist I think.

Some good points made, especially I guess with the common dates. May be fewer of them made then the more expensive ones, but they are less scrutinized due to exactly my thought process there. And usually the coins around the area go for really high or at least more than I would want to pay. But then again usually it is common Morgans and silver that everyone knows about so guess there aren't too many collectors of early copper around. Well definitely learning my lesson here and hopefully it can get resolved in a satisfactory manner. We will see.

@ coppercastle
To be quite honest I wasn't joking at all .. Assuming the auction house doesn't refund his money , his only other option would be to file a claim ...
Now we all know that doing that will require more time and money in the long run , maybe you win but at the end of the day is all this worth a 150 bucks ? I really do hope the auction house works things out as that would be the right thing for them to do ..
I myself would try this avenue first but what if they don't ?
As unfortunate as this is , we all seen how Typecoin971793 identified these as fake just by looking at a couple photos online .. If he could do that I'm sure he would have known in seconds had he actually had the coins in hand .. What I'm getting at with this is for me this would be a lesson to not buy from places like this unless I really know my stuff..
As I stated before this could of happen to a lot of people myself included but just because I wouldn't spend more time and money taking this place to court doesn't mean I agree with what they done ..
I truly hope everything works it's self out but for me it just wouldn't be worth the headach to drag this out if it didn't , that's all I was trying to say ..

This would be the best option for both parties, especially if they (the auction house) intends to keep selling coins. Many collectors these days are involved in local (often tight knit) circles of collectors & buyers. Being known to unwittingly fleece knock-off's isn't a reputation any business (that wishes to remain in business) should persue. Word travels fast in the 21st century, often only taking a few clicks of the keyboard to wreck a reputation that has taken years to earn.
Best wishes Mister Kairu.

Well just got off the phone with the auctioneer and he says they will refund my money and undo the transaction! :D A huge weight off my shoulders and definitely a lesson learned. It helps that this particular consignor was relatively unknown to the auction house and like others have said they did not want their reputation tarnished since they are relatively new to the selling coins game. Seems a very honest auctioneer and will definitely be more researched in the future regarding these local auctions. Thanks all for the advice!
