It may be the lighting, but the field of the Half Cent obv looks like the color is way different than the rims? The large cent looks gr8! Just taking a stab-in-the-dark, I'm wagering about $100 for the lot?

Well the Half Cent rims are a bit lighter but not as much as in the picture mostly the lighting. And I guess sad to say it was more than $100... now you guys getting me worried here lol. But yeah I will admit the Half Cent looks a lot better than my picture makes it out to be, even though that is what everyone says ;P

Now I'm not the best with copper coins but to me your Half Cent looks around EF and I'd say the large cent is AUish .. RedBook is high retail but to get an idea , it has 1829 ef40 @ 140 bucks and au50 1851 @ 125.. So If both these coins are problem free and I'm close to there actual grades then I'd say they value around 175 ..

Wow. Love them both. Great pickups. If you picked them up from 120 or less I'd be thrilled. Nice job!

I'm glad I trusted my gut on this one. The Half Cent is fake. There is only one die variety for this year, and here is a picture from NGC's website: Look at the tail of the 9, the height of the 2, the style of the denticles, the size of the stars. They are all different, and since there are no other die varieties for this year, it must be counterfeit. I have yet to find it on the no-no site, but I have found some similar examples: http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...9_image.jpeg

And, unfortunately, here's your large cent: The date on yours is far smaller than on any other 1851 than I looked at on Google Images.

Wow... Now that is something I certainly didn't want to hear... And this is a reputable auction company in the area they do auctions every Monday night almost... I can kind of see what you are saying Type, but I will confirm it with my LCS tomorrow as well. That then raises the question has anyone bought a fake coin from an auction? Are you able to contact them and get money back? :( and BTW I got both for $160, which didn't seem too bad considering the " Half Cent" is better details than my pics show.

Lol well you are right... I weighed them and the half (supposed to weigh 5.44 grams) weighs between 7 and 8 and the large cent (supposed to weigh 10.89) weighs 12.... So yeah seems I did pretty bad then.... Going to definitely be giving them a call tomorrow morning

Most auctions houses protect themselves by saying something along the lines of " purchase of these items is as is where is" sort of thing.

I don't know anything about half-cents, but my first thought on the cent was that the date was too small.

Regardless of what the auction house says, selling unmarked counterfeits is a pretty serious offense. At any rate, if they refuse to refund you, I would file a claim in small claims court. You are almost certain to win.

Wow I really hate to hear that !! I wouldn't beat myself up to bad , I'm sure those could of fooled a lot of us .. I've been looking for a Half Cent for my type set , since I'm not that familiar with these I've only been looking at slabbed coins and after seeing this I'm sure that's my best bet.. It really is unfortunate but if I were you I would label them fake and keep them as a lesson learned type of thing .. It's happens to the best of us !!

Quote: if I were you I would label them fake and keep them as a lesson learned type of thing . I hope you're joking. Allowing numismatic scams to take place without any recourse is as conducive to the problem as pulling the scam yourself. The scammer gets a fat check, goes & purchases 50 more Chinese fakes & rips off other unsuspecting collectors. Wash, rinse & repeat. However, If the auctionhouse doesn't want a rep for selling bogus stuff (which is likely), they'll issue a stop payment to the cosignee & potentially ban them from fleecing additional knockoffs. As the old adage goes, "If you're not part of the solution...."
