I recently won a pair of interesting Ulysses S. Grant medals on ebay, but have been unable to find any additional information on them. The smaller 28mm white metal piece is a memorial medal, which may be a US mint product according to a friend of mine. The larger 37mm piece is a victory medal, which appears to have once had a ribbon attached and seems to be composed of a tin like material. Can anyone provide any additional background info on these U.S. Grant medals? Thanks for taking a look!

The medal with the hole is an 1885 Ulysses S. Grant Death Memorial Medal by G.B. Soley in Philadelphia 38 mm; all info came from this Stacks auction archive result http://www.stacksbowers.com/archive...results.aspx

From what I can find, the Grant Born and Died is also a Death Medal struck in white metal 30 mm; info from this Stacks auction result http://www.stacksarchive.com/viewlo...1464920c376e

Now whether it too was struck by Soley I am unsure of.

The most interesting thing I found out is Soley purchased the first steam powered coin press from the US Mint in 1875 to strike medals and tokens. The press was donated to the Franklin Institute Science Museum which has sent it to the ANA for display. http://www.coinbooks.com/esylum_v11n44a11.html
