There's one bank in a small town that I've went to recently and the tellers don't say anything rude, but have the "stank face" on when I ask for rolls of penny's. It's an old bank that my great grandfather banked at and I find a lot of good stuff in some of their rolls. I've asked for coins several times, but I'm afraid to get too technical (like asking for a box) because I don't have an account there.

Is there any tips or anything for dealing with these tellers? Or advice on what to ask for so they don't feel I'm making their lives stressful? Could it be because they know I don't have an account? There's another few older banks in the area I want to try, but this one is making me a bit antsy to do so.

tough, without an account they have no real reason to help you out. if you cannot afford to open a savings account with them, then I would suggest finding out who the head teller is, and arrange to come in when he/she is working, and try to establish a relationship with them. Use the fact that your Grandpa used to bank with them, and he used to come and buy rolls to search through. tell them that coin collecting is a way of remembering your grandpa. You never know, you might end up getting stuff that was found by them, silver, ikes, or older coins.

He didn't get rolls from them, he wasn't too into numismatics. He had a safety deposit bid there though. I want an account with them, but I'm afraid to get one if I might not bank there long.

Some times you just have to pay up or shut up. fact is if you don't have an account they can just say no. Period. if you have an account they are at least obliged to offer you something.

this hobby to be effective in finding good stuff, you need to do volume, buying 10 to 20 rolls of pennies a week, might net you a few Wheaties, buying 10 to 20 boxes a week, will net you some Indians and tons of Wheaties.

Case in point; I roll hunt in Canada, and I hunt for silver mainly. On a weekly average I get about $5000 quarters, and $2000 in dimes. My average silver per week is about $2(+) I tried hunting in the USA, however I only have 1 bank to go to, so I got a box of halfs, and some loose rolls, I found 0.

in Canada I have 6 banks I deal with (not branches, banks) each bank has multiple branches to go to.

How much do you order from a typical single bank?

And how do you turn back in that much in change?

I don't/cant order any. Most of my pick up banks know me, and know when I come in. they hold whatever customer wrapped rolls they have for me. and when I dump my coins, I take back between $1500 and $2000 at a time.

I am at a bank almost every day, and I dump coins almost everyday (sometimes twice a day)

A good box of chocolates at right occasions would always help.

I would just try one of those other old banks and see if the tellers are friendly or not.

The next time you go there bring a box of doughnuts or a pound cake and thanjk them for helping you with your hobby. If you tell them you CRH and make videos on YouTube, they seem to want to help you.

I learned early on that gifting tellers for doing their job only dried up the finds, tellers catch on quick. Once a year, say Christmas is ok I suppose.

A nice smile and polite conversation seems to work for me in banks I have no accounts with.

I am not doing the volume ace is talking about, but I have just got to talking with the tellers. I have also helped them with Statehood Quarters they are looking for. I am doing about 2 boxes a week (Nickels, Quarters or Halfs) at a large downtown branch of Wells Fargo.
