Got this in a sealed lot at our local coin club auction. Any help would be appreciated. It's 20-22 mm and weighs 3.9 g.

It is a Gordian III but something about the coin makes me think it is not authentic . I have seen a lot of silver coins coming out of eastern Europe looking like this with lots of scratches and markings to hide the soft details or casting cracks.

Coins of Gordian III are pretty common and fairly inexpensive. While I don't see any signs of casting the overall appearance does look a bit odd. The coin looks like it has been run over with something and the lettering and obverse and reverse design doesn't look like what I would expect to see on a struck coin. This can be explained away if the coin has been damaged which IMO it does appear to be. However I'd put a question mark on this one being real or not?.

Welllll, why not let me be the one to rush in where others fear to tread?

This coin has been badly battle scarred down through the years, and its scars make it look odd. But if it is in fact made of silver and not some base metal, then I am reasonably sure it is authentic. If it cost you anything less than 15 bucks, then you wouldn't be out much if someone determined it was fake, because that's about tops for it as an authentic piece in this condition. I don't think its a fouree, but if it is made entirely of base metal that too is a possibility.

Ancients are definitely not my thing, hence needing help with it. I just have a few in my collection. I didn't see any casting marks either, but it just looked "odd." It doesn't exactly sit flat (kinda wavy), so maybe it was just beat up? It's not magnetic, if that helps at all. It was in a sealed lot with other non-ancient coins, which I won in the club's auction for $15. Since the others items would cover that value, this is basically a freebie. I appreciate the help a lot.

Oh, is there a proper orientation for ancients? This is coin orientated as opposed to medal.
