Before the U.S. Mint site went down, they had the 2008 schedule posted with 2008 Kennedy Half-Dollar Bags and Rolls as well as 2008 Sacagawea dollars Bags and Rolls to go on sale on January 17th. On January 18th the U.S. Mint site had the following: "Additionally, on January 17, the 2008 Kennedy Half-Dollar Bags and Rolls went on sale. You also may order these products by calling our toll-free number." Did the Sacagaweas go on sale? or is a better question: Will there be Sacagaweas in 2008?

I just give the mint a call (800-872-6468 press 1) and got a pre-recorded voice message that stated the "2008 Golden Dollars have been delayed and are currently not avaiable." I would take that exactly as that--the mint couldn't create enough of them fast enough to keep all the collectors happy so they pushed the date back for a week or two. THe possibiltity still remains that they might decide to cancel them all together, though I think we have at least a few more years to enojoy them.

GFR3 thanks for the update. I have continued to watch the Mint website since it came back up and their schedule still has January 17th as the release date; however, no place to buy them. They still haven't published anything describing a delay in production. Anyone have an update?

SALE OF 2008 Sacagawea dollars? "The U.S. Mint is concerned that no law authorizes striking of 2008 Sacagawea dollars for sale to collectors. In a statement Jan. 28, the Mint said, "The United States Mint has determined that Public Law 110-82 does not provide to the United States Mint the authority to mint and issue 2008 Sacagawea Golden Dollars for collectors. "However, we are providing assistance to Congress in an effort to expedite the passage of a technical amendment that will resolve the matter. "Until such time, we will not be offering for sale our annual sets and other products that include the Sacagawea Golden Dollar." At issue is not striking of Sac dollars for circulation, but rather examples for sale in Mint products to collectors. Numismatic News is monitoring the situation for any developments. "

The Mint Has Become A Big Disappointment In My Eyes! Every since their website went down for seven days it seems like they have gone down with their customer service to the public and the shipping service as well. I have had many Items damaged, thrown in the box without packing materials. It is a shame what the mint is coming to. Are they more worried about the Presidential Coins than the Sacagawea dollars? I think so!

I would say that the mint has misinterpreted the law. It changes the design of the Sac dollar as of 2009, but it does not eliminate or change the authorization they currently have to issue Sac dollars of the current design. (They also misinterpreted the language to come to the conclusion that they did not have to strike the earlier mandated 1 for every two president dollars. And even if you did accept their argument that it removed that requirement, it replaced it with a 1 for every 4 requirement which they also didn't strike.)

You would think with the origional date of Jan. 17th that at least some 2008 Sackies have already been minted.

I have been checking the US mint for past few weeks looking for a release date for the 2008 Sac's and find nothing. Yesterday I received a Littleton catalog and what do you see on the last page. Yep, 2008 Sac's P&D sets. So I ask how is it that Littleon gets them to offer and the small time collectors like us get shut out by the mint once again. Could it be because I don't buy $1M a year in coins and have a truck load delivered to one single address? Does anyone know why the mint would sell them to big dealers & not to the collectors simultaneously?

Well why the hell don't you? If you are going to collect coins get serious about it man!
I ordered some stuff from the Mint at the end of last month, including an '07 UNC Silver Eagle, which it said was backordered until 1-31-08. It still says that, and that is all that my order is waiting on, almost 2 weeks later. Should I keep waiting, or should I cancel my Eagle, let everything else ship, and reorder it with my next order? Or will I lose my place in line?
Second, Is it worth buying the rolls of coins from the mint, for over face value? Or should I just see if I can find them at my bank? Is buying anything from the mint usually a good investment? Or just some things?

I guarantee Littleton does not have them since the US Mint has not minted ANY yet! They had to print their catalogs in late 2007 and probably assumed they would be available in January and they assumed wrong.

I checked Littleton's internet catalog and no 2008 Sacagawea Business Strike Dollars so I called customer service. He said, "We got the Sacagawea's in the 2008 catalog and then the U.S. Mint informed us that there were not going to be any released in 2008."
We all know that Congress is trying to get an amendment passed so that there MAY be some released in 2008 and we now know that Litleton doesn't have any YET.
Can't wait for Congress to pass their amendment so I can add them to my 2000-2008 display.

That's sounds about the right. "the catalog was in print before Littleton learned the Mint was releasing the Sac's as scheduled.
Why not buy the rolls from the mint? The Sac's & JFK are not circulated. The dealers will gladly sell them to you at a mark up and thats ok, thay is why they are business. The Mint is a better deal.
